Just back from the Windy (and rainy) City and the fourth edition of EXPO CHICAGO. Touted as an “International Exposition of Contemporary & Modern Art”, the fair is fast finding its identity and footing in the crowded fair circuit in North America. More than anything else, EXPO CHICAGO has turned into a terrific contemporary art fair, even to the point where in this go round, it had a near Miami Basel-like feel to it. Similar to last year, there were approximately 140 exhibitors including 25 or so international galleries. Particularly well-executed was the grouping of 25 younger galleries in the EXPOSURE section which turned the spotlight on the emerging artists in their respective rosters. Gloomy weather did not dampen enthusiasm and opening night was insanely crowded – there’s just something about calling it a VIP event and offering free food to bring out a bit of glamour and way too many people. Thankfully, regular fair hours the next day allowed for a more relaxed and pleasurable viewing experience with the focus being on the art.
The exhibitor lineup mainly featured US-based galleries and, somewhat countercurrent to the typical heavy Asian representation at these events, a strong European contingent made up the bulk of the international component. In terms of the art, post-war gems were sprinkled throughout and co-existed nicely with the more predominant offering of recent works of emerging and established artists. Hardcore modern art continued to fade into the backdrop although there was the occasional sighting of a modern master work or two.
Among the fair standouts were several recent works by New York artist Andrew Sutherland. Particularly striking was “TBT”, 2015, acrylic on canvas (78 x 48 in.) which featured an off-beat abstract pattern of cascading blue parallelograms. These were reconstructed from cut strips of painted canvas that were stitched together in a not so deliberate way - a fantastic fusion of a partly process-based approach and a bit of randomness. LA-based Ruben Ochoa’s “Opus #2 (Title to be Determined)” and “Opus #3 (Title to be Determined)”, 2015, rust on panel (each 36 x 24 in.) were also among the impressive newer works. While Ochoa is more closely associated with large sculptural installations, these more modest works shared his familiar style of incorporating an element of illusion into his creations. In this case, he used an oxidizing agent to magically transform the appearance of painted canvas into a weather-beaten slab of metal.
Among the works of more established artists, the showstoppers included Bridget Riley’s “Myrrh”, 1985, oil on canvas (65 x 54.5 in.) which was visually stunning and hypnotically destabilizing. The Op-Art masterpiece consisted of narrow vertical bands of vibrant colours and was prominently exhibited near an open space which maximized its mesmerizing effect. Sticking with the British theme, another standout was Richard Smith’s “A Whole Year and Half a Day IX”, 1966, acrylic on canvas (60.3 x 60.3 x 12 in.) which was a hyper-stretched irregularly shaped canvas with a dynamic two-colour palette that seemed to draw inspiration from Ellsworth Kelly’s playbook. Other highlights included Lawrence Carroll’s part sculptural “Heaven Picasso”, 1994-95, oil, wax, housepaint, newspaper and canvas on wood (54.7 x 41.7 x 3 in. ) and Emilio Vedova’s very lyrical “Del Nostro Tempo”, 1990, oil and mixed media on paper mounted on cardboard (12.3 x 9.3 in.).
All-in-all, EXPO CHICAGO delivered in a big way. Also rising to the occasion however were the Cubs. Sitting somewhat securely in the second of two wild card spots and destined to advance to post season play, the Cubs were entertaining the league leading St. Louis Cardinals in what was being billed as a preview of the National League pennant matchup. Letting their bats do the talking, the Cubs took the first two of three games in the series and stoked the frenzy of the championship starved fan base. Just to put things in perspective, the last time the Cubs won the World Series was 106 years ago - that’s the longest drought in North American professional sports. Needless to say, that was even enough for the scensters to dig deep into their closets and break out their sports jerseys and caps in a show of solidarity and support.
