EP Review - Virginia Sook, ‘Mandarin Song’
Mandarin Song is the latest three-song EP as well as single from Brisbane - now - Paris based outfit Virginia Sook, the songwriting moniker of singer, guitarist and harpist Lindsay Roser, along with multi-instrumentalist Matthew Hsu and double bass courtesy of Andrew McInally. The distinction of Roser’s harp is one that I personally thought would lead to a loud, distinct voice, in addition to all the exotic instrumentation. However, Lindsay’s voice as well as the band’s conservatism in regards to how this instrumentation is deployed leads to a record that is somewhat hum-drum for more adventurous listeners. However if you are a fan of subtle Australian folk a la Two Steps on The Water or Jess Locke then you will enjoy this small 3-song offer, delivered courtesy of ruined smile Records.
