“Are you James Lee?”

“Who’re you?”

I’m the ER nurse who has to stay overtime because of you, you damn thug—

You took a deep breath and smiled. You introduced yourself properly and calmly. 

“What can I do for you, ma’am?”

“Don’t call me ma’am.” 

“Sorry, noona then.”

You resisted the urge to scoff. Through gritted teeth, you spoke, “If you’re going to beat people up, can you do it somewhere far away from the local hospital?”

“Why?”

“Because when we’re treating the punks you send to our ER, that’s time and energy that could be spent on people with unavoidable injuries.”

“Why should I care about that?” He stepped closer until his chest was only an inch away from yours. You had to crane your neck to meet his gaze. “And what are you going to do if I don’t stop sending more guys to your ER?”

“Nothing. I came here to talk, but if you don’t want to listen that’s your choice. It’s my fault for expecting an adult response.”

James didn’t stop you from leaving, and you expected him to double the number of bodies as revenge. 

You did not, however, expect him to stroll inside the hospital during your shift and say “Go out with me.”

You blinked, looked over your shoulder, then back at the redhead. You then cradled your head in your hands. “Geez, I can’t believe I’m so tired I’ve actually started hallucinating about that thug.”

“I’m not a hallucination.”

“...I’m hearing things.”

“Wake up, noona, I’m standing right here.”

“I know, I was trying to save you the embarrassment of getting rejected outright, but I guess you want to do this.”

“Go out with me.”

“Yeah, sure.”

“I’m serious.”

“Get lost, kid.”

“I’m eighteen—”

“You’re wearing a high school uniform, as far as I’m concerned, you’re a kid. In fact, you look to be about my baby brother’s age. Go back to class already, I have work to do.”

“There won’t be any extra patients today, I know because I did what you said.”

“That doesn’t matter, I still have things to do.”

“All right, then until you get off work, just ignore me—”

“Listen here,” you warned, pulling on his collar so he’d be bending to your eye level, “I don’t care if this is because of a bet or just some sick idea of a prank, but this is a hospital and it’s my workplace. If you can’t understand how serious this is, then you really are just a brat, so go back to school—or don’t skip your classes for all I care, but stay away from me. Understand?”

James wordlessly nodded.

You let go. You smiled and smoothed out his shirt. “Good.” 

After that encounter, you thought  for sure you would never see him again, but after your 12-hour shift you found him standing outside the hospital entrance, hands tucked into his pants and looking like a lost dog.

“Ugh.” You didn’t bother hiding your discontent. “I’m too tired and sober to deal with you, go away.”

“I’ll walk you back to your house—”

“Why, so you can vandalize it?”

“I wouldn’t do that.”

You crossed your arms. 

He refused to meet your eyes. “W-what?”

“Well? Don’t you have anything you want to say to me?”

“No—”

“Then goodbye—”

“Wait!”

He cleared his throat and mumbled, “I’m sorry for disturbing your work.”

“Good enough. See ya, kid.”

“I’m walking you home.”

Knowing that he won’t be dissuaded, you shrugged. “Do what you want.”

The store bell rang, signaling a new customer, but you were too busy laughing at Little Daniel venting to you about Zoe Park visiting him every night for “no reason.” 

“It’s not funny, noona! She comes in, buys nothing and teases me until she gets bored.”

“So kick her out.”

“Well, it’s not like she’s a troublemaker, and she does help me with math—ah.” Daniel’s eyes flickered upward.

“I thought you said that you don’t like younger men.” Soft lips brushed against your ear. “You’re breaking my heart, noona.”

“Excuse me?” You turned around, ready to give this guy what for.

“Don’t tell me you forgot.” The stranger removed his cap, wavy pink locks fell over dark eyes. 

Ah, crap.

“James—”

“Actually it’s DG now, and I’ve come to check up on my future bride.”

You could hear the silent chorus of WHAT? from the spectators in the shop and quickly covered DG’s mouth. “Are you crazy?” You dragged him to a corner. “What the hell are you talking about?”

He let out an exaggerated sigh. “I can’t believe you forgot, can’t say I wasn’t expecting this, but it still hurts.”

“Cut the crap and explain yourself.”

“Three years ago you promised to marry me once I became your ideal man.”

You never promised a thing! You were about to tell him off when something clicked in your mind and bombarded you with a distant memory—

It was during your break. You were eating a packed lunch at the gazebo near the hospital while James sucked on a strawberry and chocolate lollipop. “Noona, when I turn 19 next year, will you finally agree to go out with me?”

“You could turn 20 tomorrow and I wouldn’t agree.”

“Why not?”

“You’re not my type, James.”

“What is your type?”

You thought about it for a moment before answering, “An outstanding man of society.”

“That’s so vague. What does that even mean?”

“If you can’t figure it out then you’re too young for me.”

He twirled the lollipop in his hand. “If I become someone like that, will you consider becoming my girlfriend?”

“Tell you what,” you muttered between bites, “if you become an outstanding adult, I’ll consider becoming your wife.”

The lollipop fell on the floor. James looked at you, wide-eyed—

You groaned and pulled on your hair, buckling over. Strong, gentle hands caught you by the shoulders.

“So you finally remembered,” James—or rather, DG—said with a satisfied grin. “It took a while to find you, but your future husband is here now.”

“Stop it!” You can’t believe this was happening. You just said that to mess with him. It was obviously a joke, one you would have never expected for him to remember, let alone take seriously. 

“Um, excuse me.” Ever the lifesaver, Little Daniel walked over with shaking knees. “Is everything all right?”

The affection in DG’s face was replaced with coldness as he tucked his hair under his cap again. “We’re fine. I was just about to leave.”

He leaned over until his breath brushed your ear. “I only came here to make sure you were safe. I’ll return once I become the perfect man.” 

The other girls in the store squirmed with excitement. They burst into squeals once DG was out of earshot.

You reassured Daniel you were fine, but you both knew that was a lie as you desperately rubbed the goosebumps on your arms. Your stomach was heavy, like someone just dropped a stone down there. 

a/n: I'm really enjoying this lax writing format, there's less pressure to set the scene and I don't have to write 2500 words per chapter ૮ ˶´ ᵕˋ ˶ა
