Window Sill, Andrew Palmer

A stormy day in Port Gaverne- not able to go out and paint. A Geranium in a pot on the window sill, wild wind and sea outside. I had a small canvas prepared and my oil paints were ready to go, so in a moment of quiet stillness I sat and painted. It was spontaneous and I was transported beyond time. At the end of the day I put the canvas to one side in the studio and thought no more of it until I came to considering which paintings to frame for my recent exhibition. This painting 'Window Sill' came into its own, and, being my most recent painting, has indicated a new departure for me. In its 'unthinkingness' and combination of inside and out side, - soft growing nature and wild stormy sea-- abstract expressionist elements and figurative representational drawing- all without me having to try to hard- it is an understated painting, but one which is very important to me.

Cot Valley 2 SOLD, Andrew Palmer

"I am very influenced by the sea and have always been fascinated by its power and ever changing moods. I immerse myself in the dramatic land and seascapes that surround me in Cornwall and initially make studies, in oil on canvas or board, painting quickly using bold and vigorous brushstrokes to express my subjective response to the location. In the studio I work from these studies on larger paintings which are often more abstract and expressive, while still conveying the atmosphere and specific sense of place of the original subject." This painting was made at Cot Valley, Penwith, in the far west of Cornwall. The boulders have been worn by the sea to resemble egg shapes.

The Road to Sougia, Andrew Palmer

In the series that I painted in Crete recently. We travelled extensively and made the trip to Sougia on the south coast many times. The perspective created by the winding mountain roads and the colours, especially in the evening when the sun was low, were extraordinary. This painting in mixed media- oil pastel , dry pastel and charcoal, is an abstract 'compound image' of those trips and evocative of the inspirational time that I spent there. The painting is in the above mixed media on fine quality paper, mounted, framed and glazed.

Port Gaverne Pebbles, Andrew Palmer

'Port Gaverne Pebbles' 2016.Oil on canvas. 20 x 30 inches. Beachcombing at Port Gaverne I became preoccupied with the pebbles and began by painting them- each one individual and unique but unified in their presence as the shoreline- only to be dressed, undressed and changed by the powerful waves.Rythmical, sensuous, lapping and crashing waves. The tide turned. The weather changed. The sea and the sky drew my attention.I painted from the bottom to the top of the canvas (unusually). The ever enveloping sea and the approaching storm developed in layers, the paint, almost literally, describing the scene. I went out of myself. Oil paint, linseed oil and paste, Cerulean blue, aquamarine,ochres, salty white spray. Squeeqies, bold brushstrokes and expressive skeins of colour.

Porth Nanven, Andrew Palmer

The large, smooth boulders which populate the beaches of Porth Nanven Cove have led to its being referred to by some as ‘Dinosaur Egg Beach’. The black boulders were used to line the vaults of the Bank of England. Cape Cornwall has an ancient and elemental atmosphere about it which is especially encapsulated by Cot Valley and the magnetic beach at Nanven which lies at its mouth. Celtic settlements, stone circles and quoits abound along with the abandoned tin mines which draw me back to explore and interpret the power of nature, especially where the land meets the sea. In this painting I was inspired by the particular way in which the waves broke over the egg shaped rocks and the dramatic but smooth and sensuous emotion that that meeting provoked in me. I spent some time camping near Zennor and made many 'plein air' studies on the spot encapsulating the varied moods that the sea, the land and the weather created. My spiritual interaction with them guided the interaction of - oil paint, linseed oil and paste, turpentine, coarse brushes, squeegies, sand, seaweed and all the elements, to create images which I then worked with in my studio in Port Gaverne, on a one metre square canvas, quite quickly in this instance , to produce this painting 'Nanven'.
