BETWEEN BAKERY AND BOARDSHOP
by Andrew Schoultz
Born in Milwaukee, Andrew Schoultz roamed the US before settling in California—but now wanders the globe creating paintings, drawings, murals, and installations. His distinctive illustrative style often explores a range of serious themes including the social, political, economic, and environmental, and draws from historical and contemporary symbolism and iconography, such as the eye from the dollar bill. An avid skateboarder who told @JuxtapozMag “I still skate pretty hardcore, especially for being 43 years old” Schoultz says he never wanted wanted that or his graffiti to define him but both have had a major influence on his work. Appropriate then that when @PowWowWorldwide teamed up with @MOAHLancaster, CA in 2016, Schoultz’s three-eyed Lancaster Blvd composition ended up on the side of @TheLemonLeaf cafe and bakery, looking across the driveway at @Pharmacy_Boardshop—and provided a backdrop for Schoultz to show off a few tricks himself. @aschoultz/

“SPY TIGER”
by Andrew Schoultz
With more than 350 historical aircraft filling 6 hangars and covering over 80 acres of desert on the outskirts of Tucson, Pima Air and Space Museum is one of the largest non-government funded aviation museums in the world. Following on the success of an earlier project, asking a group of artists to paint nose cones of airplanes for a show, in 2012 gallery owner @EricFirestone added to the museum collection asking several high-profile street artists to paint entire planes. Among them Andrew Schoultz, whose work draws inspiration from German map-making and Persian miniatures and often references chaos and destruction in the world around us, painted this Lockheed VC-140—the military version of the JetStar—looking out over Valencia Rd. @aschoultz @pimaair

“TREE OF LIFE”
by Andrew Schoultz
“Inspired by both 15th century German map making and the Indian tradition of miniature painting” says Artspace, themes of destruction and fantasy permeate Andrew Schoultz’s visual commentary on historical and environmental climates. Described by Artsy as “densely layered, chaotic, narrative imagery” they elaborate on Schoultz’s choices of weighty environmental, political, and economic subject matters. For the Forest for the Trees project in Portland, Oregon, the San Francisco artist tapped into the Northwest’s deep seated concern for the environment with this very large mural on NE Halsey Street. Painted in August, 2017 in the middle of a sweltering heat wave, Schoultz jokes about his fear of heights in painting this 100-foot-tall wall, but the result, looking out over Portland’s Hollywood District and visible from busy Sandy Blvd., surely justifies the challenges. @aschoultz @ffttnw

Back in 2016 Andrew Hosner from @thinkspace_art flew me out to @powwowlongbeach just to kick it and bring the good vibes. At the end of the week he secured me a paid gig photographing for @powwowav a few weeks later, see above @aschoultz photo. The only thing was that I had to stay in California or pay my way back to Antelope Valley from Brooklyn. Anyway, long story short I used the time to visit my buddy up north who had been working in the legal cannabis market for a few years. This was the first time I was able to see what it would look like to begin to involve legal cannabis work into my life. It’s crazy to think that it’s only been two and a half years and now I’ll be moving to LA to continue to work full time in cannabis for @sonomapac all while surrounding myself with the arts and artists I love so much! See you soon LA!!! #AndrewSchoultz #PowWowAV #powwowantelopevalley (at Lancaster, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxLkVlznL9P/?igshid=kzy3ekyxxdkc
