Did the Galaxy S6 Edge just beat the Nexus 6 to an Android update?

The Galaxy S6 Edge is one of the best Android phones we’ve ever had the pleasure of using. As such, it gets a lot of attention: in the street, in the market place and also in the developer departments of Samsung. The same is true of the carriers that stock it. This is why it looks like the Galaxy S6 Edge Android 5.1.1 update just made it to T-Mobile customers before even the Nexus 6 has it. Here’s what we know about the Galaxy S6 Edge update.

Guest Mode returns

The Galaxy S6 Edge fortunately shipped with silent mode out of the box, but a feature that didn’t make the cut was Guest Mode. Thankfully, the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update has delivered that feature to the Galaxy S6 Edge. A developer by the name of Eduardo Mera (Sunderwear) on XDA Developers posted the following video and image that seems to show a build of Android 5.1.1 compiled on April 28. We can’t confirm it is legitimate, but if so, it means the T-Mobile Galaxy S6 Edge got 5.1.1 before even the T-Mobile Nexus 6.

So far it looks like only the T-Mobile Galaxy S6 Edge that has received Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. We’ll keep our ears peeled for other carriers updates, but we’re not expecting anyone else to deliver quite this quickly. Still, as the video above seems to prove, the 5.1.1 build is legit. How to clear the cache on the Galaxy S6

If you’re at all unfamiliar with how to clear the cache on the Galaxy S6, today we’ll walk you through the basics: what a cache wipe is, the different kinds of cache and how to wipe the cache. Whether you call it cache clearing, wiping the cache, clearing the system partition or cache wiping, we’ll show you how it’s done.

 Keep your Galaxy S6 running smoothly with regular cache wipes.

What is a cache wipe?

Good question. It depends on what cache you’re talking about: the app cache or the system cache. As you can probably tell, the app cache is for specific apps and the system cache is for the Android system itself. The cache is basically like the Temp folder on your PC – a bit of a dumping ground for temporary data. While caches make your Galaxy S6 faster, they can also get bogged down, hence needing to clear the Galaxy S6 cache on occasion.

How to wipe the app cache on the Galaxy S6

If you want to clear the app cache on the Galaxy S6 – whether for one app in particular or for all apps, you do this through the Settings menu. Go to Settings > App Manager and find the individual app of which you want to clear the cache. Remember it might be in the Downloaded, Running or All tab. Tap the entry and then tap Clear Cache. If you want to clear all app caches simultaneously, go to Settings > Storage and tap Cached Data > OK.

Clear app caches one by one in Settings > App Manager or altogether in Settings > Storage > Clear Data.

How to wipe the system cache on the Galaxy S6

If it’s your Android system that is acting weird and not just an app or two, you might want to clear the system cache, also known as wiping the cache partition. The most common time this is useful is straight after an Android update, when battery drain, glitches, crashes or other weirdness can occasionally affect your system.

1. Turn off your Galaxy S6.

2. Press and hold Power, Volume Up and the Home button.

3. You’ll see a blue screen with the Android on it, then you’ll be taken to the recovery menu.

4. Use the volume buttons to scroll and highlight Wipe Cache Partition. Press Power to confirm.

 Select Wipe Cache Partition.

5. You’ll see a message in yellow at the bottom of the screen when the process is complete.

 You’ll get a ”wipe complete” message once it’s done.

6. Highlight Reboot System Now and press Power to confirm.

 Time to rebooot your Galaxy S6.

7. Your Galaxy S6 will reboot and recompile all of your apps. It might take a little while to re-cache them all, but once it is done you should have a Galaxy S6 running as smooth as can be.

No signal, no problem: EE's WiFi Calling service launches with the Galaxy S6 on 10 April

EE has revealed that its WiFi Calling service will launch on 10 April, debuting with the Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 Edge and Microsoft Lumia 640.

The service is aimed at customers who’ve got spotty cellular connections in their homes, suffering from poor call quality or even the inability to make calls and receive texts in certain areas of their house.

WiFi Calling eliminates that by allowing devices to make and receive calls as well as texts, using a Wi-Fi connection. It’s a welcome feature, but it does sadly mean that we might soon start hearing people nattering away on Underground platforms.

While other networks like Three also offer this service, they require separate apps. EE’s solution is built-in to the actual devices themselves, and WiFi Calling is automatically enabled the moment a Wi-Fi connection is established.

That means that users can use their devices exactly as they would normally – the same dialler, the same text app – without having to take any extra steps or open up another app.

We’ve been testing the service out for the past week, and it’s worked as advertised, letting us make calls in notorious dead spot rooms without any problems.

There’s no specific list of supported devices yet (and EE was unable to confirm iPhone support), but we do know that EE is planning to bring the service to more than 5 million customers by summer.

WiFi calling is a feature present in iOS 8, so we’ll eat our SIM cards if EE doesn’t roll out the feature to its Apple-toting customers in future.

Update: EE has told us that the WiFi Calling feeature is actually available a day early, for iPhone users who have downloaded the latest iOS 8.3 update from Apple. Compatible handsets include the iPhone 5s, 5c, 6, and 6 Plus.

 Which is the fastest? Galaxy S6 Edge or iPhone 6.

The test was conducted by AndroidGamE, and while not exactly scientific, it does make for interesting viewing. During this test, the Galaxy S6 Edge and iPhone 6 are put side-by-side while various apps and games are loaded. It’s actually just a pleasure to see how fast the S6 Edge is in action (rather than based on benchmark numbers).

The S6 Edge is the leader for most of it until Real Racing 3 appears, where the iPhone 6 catches up, but still the Galaxy S6 Edge beats it by eight seconds in the end. Check it out the video underneath:

The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge have already broken Samsung’s previous pre-order record by receiving a combined 20 million pre-orders.

A “top executive” at a leading mobile carrier in Europe told the Korea Times that there had been “15 million [pre-orders] of the S6 and five million of the S6 Edge from mobile carriers” worldwide.

The Netherlands was the first country to start taking pre-orders for the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, which will cost 699 Euros and 849 Euros respectively (32GB models). Samsung is offering more incentives than ever – such as $200 Samsung headphones – for new customers to pick up a Galaxy following a sales slump in 2014.
