Android Based Interactive Signage Goes Live - See You at DSE-2015
The DSE-2014 (Digital Signage Expo) was a phenomenal success. It is enough to see the recap video (http://www.digitalsignageexpo.net/dse-2014-video-recap-0) to realize that it was the biggest, the most global and innovative digital signage show. I believe this truly indicates that this industry is 'woken up' from a long stagnation. It is surely leaving the comfort zones of airports and huge companies and moving towards SMBs, entertainment solutions and all sort of new exciting areas that now will be able to allow themselves to take part at the digital signage 'festival'.
Last year success was not only for the big players... Small, fast responding startups also found themselves creating hype around their innovative approach especially around the Android based digital signage capabilities (NoviSign at the digital signage Expo 2014), that many thought will never reach the rich capabilities of traditional digital signage players - this was definitely proven as wrong assumption, Android based digital players are now successfully serving hundreds of thousands of customers, mainly SMBs around the world and the numbers are constantly growing.
At DSE-2014 we could have seen a 'taste' of the new direction the digital signage will be taking in the coming years - Interactive Digital Signage - based on SSI technology: DSE 2014: Novisign demos interactive signage with QR codes. Experts expect this trend of interactive capabilities to expand deeper and wider at the coming DSE-2015 (http://www.digitalsignageexpo.net/). Marketing and digital media experts realized that the ability to interact with the business which the customer is currently visiting is one of the most effective promoters! This scene is currently 'ruled' by the social networks (Tweeter, Facebook, Google+, Yelp!). The digital signage platforms can (and must) join this interactive scenery, combining the smartphone and social networking capabilities at the right location at the right time - on the customer venue!

Android Digital Signage Players - What fits you best?
Android digital signage players are considered the 'refreshing surprise' of the digital signage industry in the last few short years. It started to really pick up, only in the last year and it is now clear that the 'skeptical experts' were simply stuck somewhere in the nineties expecting all hardware to be custom made for digital signage, including expert for each implementation and installation and that every project must have a price tag of minimum 100K dollars. These experts have under estimated the market power of SMBs that are need of digital signage, which is professional, simple to implement, yet cost effective. The android digital signage players were the answer for their prayers! The power of 'standard and simple' had shown its impact once again.
The fact that one can simply step into an electronic store, purchase several Android devices and implement a digital signage private network at one's business in the very same day, seems to be sinking in the awareness of SMB owners and IT managers. With that, companies like NoviSign that provide Android based digital signage layer software are frequently challenged with the question - what device do I need to buy? What will fit me best? What do you recommend of?
These questions are valid and in order for us at NoviSign to pick up the challenge, we can clearly say - each project is different! Number of screens, allocated budget, IT skills, number and size of creative files, frequency of the content changes, HD or lesser quality, business criticality (how 'painful' it is if the screen is off/down) and many more relevant questions which become the parameters for a professional advice. NoviSign experts will try to get as much details as possible before trying to address such a question by a customer or potential customer.
In general we can split the Android digital signage players into several groups:
Basic, low cost devices:
Price: 20-40$
Basic connectivity and non-business critical
Examples: MK808, MK802, Android mini PC dual-core
Medium, medium cost devices:
Price: 50-100$
Good performance, full HD Video and business critical
Example: Minix Neo X7, Minix Neo X7 mini, MK908, Shuttle DSA2LS
High end, high cost devices:
Price: 100$ and above
Good performance, full HD Video, high frequency of changes and business critical
Example: High end tablets, Smart TV (with Android) such as NEC
End users or digital signage system integrators must not be tempted by the low price of some of the Android digital signage players in the market, as it can be very appealing at first glance, but create enormous challenges on production. Usually, digital signage software providers such as NoviSign will be happy to advice, but they cannot make the decisions for you!
Android Digital Signage Players - make sure it fits your needs!

Android Based Digital Signage - Are you still Skeptic?
Skepticism is a virtue. I like it...Mostly I do like skeptic people, they are usually smart, interesting, swimming against the stream, not narrow minded. Of course, these guys can be picky, not visionary, boring, a tedious people - these I don't like ... I believe two qualities differ between the two extremes in the 'skeptical spectrum'. First is the ability to really hear what the vision is, before simply saying, 'oh... that won't work' and the second is the ability to say - 'I was wrong - this actually happened/about to happen'.
Let's take the digital signage industry as an example. From sometime at the beginning of this decade, it was clear that this industry is 'thirsty' for some kind of a 'boost'. The huge systems for the airports and for the McDonald’s of the world, had already been sold, the big players knew which providers they should play with, and it seemed the field is reaching stagnation from one hand, while from the other hand it was clear that something must be done to make sure the smaller players (SMBs) are also entering this market.
The costs were dropping (screens, LTE) but not enough and not for all the components. The cloud based digital signage CMS had reduced the software (and support cost) but the players... The players were still too expensive for SMBs. And then came the Android...
About three years ago, young startup companies, such as NoviSign realized that in addition to their SaaS (cloud) based CMS, they can offer a player based on standard Android hardware that can be purchased in any store (or on eBay/Amazon/Alibaba) in less than 50$ and serve a full scale Android digital signage players. By that, reducing the cost of implementation by 90%-95% (!)
And the skeptical experts came to picture - it won't work, they said! It will hold the load for the 'CPU hungry' needs of digital signage. Well... They were right, at least at the beginning. It took close to two years for NoviSign to bring the Android based devices to a level it can hold a digital signage campaign - but it happened!
Today, NoviSign Android based digital signage player software is installed on thousands of active devices, running digital signage campaign on various levels of complexity. Some of the skeptical voices disappeared, some courageously admitted - 'YES - it works!'
I like the second kind of skeptical people.

Android Digital Signage - App and running!
You know what they say - the world belongs to the young :-) Well, a cliché becomes a cliché, sometimes simply because it is the plain truth... The young people determine the trends, they define what's 'cool' (and by that, what is 'uncool'...). This is true for fashion, for culture and obviously for technology, the young power defines the next 'thing' in the latest technological developments.
I believe no one will argue that the past five years had been the 'years of the app'. No one wants to see 'heavy' software installed on server to solve a specific problem, or answer a specific business need. The days in which a bunch of 'field engineers' reach a customer site and install a server, with backup, monitoring and special tools in order to provide the end use a specific solution - these days we are all as simple as an app, we all expect an app to solve our IT needs, and we are getting closer to it.
Let's take the digital signage industry - for years it was considered a 'heavy lifting' IT industry. The large volumes of the creative, bandwidth, back and control required serious investment with experts in several IT areas to complete even the most basic digital signage projects. The fresh spirit of Android based digital signage apps, provided by pioneer providers such as NoviSign, three plus years back, is not surprising anyone anymore. The dynamic world of digital signage apps and widgets is becoming more and more popular by small digital signage SIs, and surprisingly enough, it is catching the attention of the bigger players as well. Digital signage system Integrators understood it will be easier to 'leave' the servers, management, backup and hosting to the 'NoviSigns' of the world while they themselves can simply use the relevant Android digital signage app, providing the best value to their customers.
The Android based digital signage apps can be found in the 'free' version, with monthly fee for the usage of the corresponding CMS (Content Management System). Other popular for is the 'freemium' model, which allows free usage of Android digital signage apps with basic features and chargeable versions with advanced capabilities.
It is an app world - fast, dynamic, easy to implement and no less important - trendy...
Digital signage apps - keep app the good work!
Yuri.
