Ubuntu verandert Android-smartphones in pc’s

AMSTERDAM – Canonical heeft een speciale versie van besturingssysteem Ubuntu aangekondigd, waarmee Android-smartphones gebruikt kunnen worden als desktop-pc.

Ubuntu for Android, zoals de software heet, kan gebruikt worden op Android-smartphones met een multi-core processor. Als een smartphone met deze software in een dock wordt geplaatst, kan deze functioneren als volwaardige desktopcomputer, aldus ontwikkelaar Canonical.

In dat geval blijft de gebruiker bereikbaar, stelt de ontwikkelaar. Via de desktopomgeving kan men telefoneren, sms-berichten ontvangen en versturen en voicemails afluisteren.

Canonical zal Ubuntu for Android voor het eerst in het openbaar demonstreren op de Mobile World Congress (MWC), de mobieltjesbeurs die maandag van start gaat in Barcelona. Het is de bedoeling dat smartphonefabrikanten de software in hun toestellen integreren. Of de oplossing ook als los product op de markt komt, is nog niet bekend.
