Thoughts on the new mountain goats album?

i really like it. i think it's some of jd's best songwriting in a while and the instrumentation is really good, lending the whole album this sense of warmth and mournful triumph. a lot of songs on it are very powerful and connected to me strongly -- 'fresh tattoo' convinced me to get a new tattoo lmao. the only thing that i think lets it down is john darnielle's vocal performance. e.g. i think that 'murder at the 18th street garage' will be a killer live song but the studio version just doesn't have enough energy or bite to it. overall it reminds me a lot of goths, in a good way. 'ground level', 'fresh tattoo', 'jenny iii' and 'going to dallas' are instant classics for me

hey there! current college freshmen thinking of going into archaeology here. do you know if you have to learn latin/greek/other ancient languages to find positions in the field? how common is it that archaeology jobs require it?

If you’re planning to stick with academia once you have your degree, it could be useful. Other languages that might be helpful would depend on where your region of focus is, what languages are spoken there, and what languages were spoken by people who have done a lot of the archaeology work in that area (so you can read journal articles about it). For example, I have a friend who went into Egyptology, and found the most useful languages for his focus to be Arabic and German.

I took Latin, but it was neither a requirement for my course, nor have I found it to be especially useful for the work I do. It does, however, come in very handy for making up spells for my Harry Potter fanfic.

How do you feel about the Chicago flag?

EASY ten out of ten. it fucking rules. this shouild be on everything. if every city had a flag as cool as this the world would be a more joyful place

re: the gemsona thing, i think a cool gem/mineral for you to check out would be kyanite. it's a really pretty blue color, and it actually has three different polymorphs it can be, depending on the temperature and pressure conditions it was formed! so if it's formed at just the right depth it looks super cool.

i just wanted to say that your childhood character redraw things brought me SO much joy... i made characters so similar to those when i was a kid and it just makes me so happy to see 'little kid' character designs drawn in your awesome style. i'm so glad drawing them made you happy bc every time i saw a new one i was like 'yes! she made another!'

ahh im so glad!  i feel like everybody had Those Kinds of OCs as a kid and its actually really great?? I had so much fun drawing those im glad other people enjoyed them too!!

yeah! sam and i want to get a cat when i move in (to give freya what will hopefully be a friend and companion!) and we decided on Esuna...but if we get a black cat with yellow eyes we HAVE to name it Vivi. these are the stakes LMAO
