(2015) Doodle of my human sona, who was pretty much based on how I looked at the time (a bit fem and androgynous, no HRT yet)
“Radical And As Yet Unimagined...”
I’m reading Sandra Bartky’s “Foucault, Femininity, and the Modernization of Patriarchical Power” for a class I’m teaching and one passage that really stuck out to me was...
"Femininity as a certain “style of the flesh” will have to be surpassed in the direction of something quite different—not masculinity, which is in many ways only its mirror opposite, but a radical and as yet unimagined transformation of the female body."
This was published in 1988.
I often think about my own research on Black queer style and how the (and admittedly my) tendency to view masculine presentation on female-identified bodies as radical and queer (meaning non-normative) is a product of femmephobia in our society and culture. This doesn’t mean that female identified folks or transmen can’t reimagine masculinity and perform it in radical ways, but we can’t only see the radical potential in performances of masculinity. I have to begin to train my eye to recognize to value of femininity, a femininity that is powerful and radical. But because femininity is so marginalized, we have to reimagine that too. We have to reimagine a way of being that doesn’t perpetuate it’s status as the weaker and more passive subjectivity. I think in this present moment with so many folks (especially people of color, people of size, and people with disabilities) redefining queerness, androgyny, genderqueer, and transgender, particularly in the fashion world, we may be coming closer to a radical and [RE] imagined transformation of all bodies.
What a gloomy day ☁️
My aunty is going to order my first binder as soon as I get her the money ✊
