I know it's a long shot. I know that a petition to remove this guy from office likely won't have much effect, but I have to try. Because as a citizen living in Mississippi, I can't turn a blind eye to the fact that the people we have in power are being allowed to say such horrible things without apology or consequence.
So please guys, share this, sign it, do whatever you feel you need to to help remove this guy from office. (So long as it's legal and you don't harm anyone. Let's not become like the other guys in effort to remove them from power.)

When people say reckless things

Recently, a Mississippi state representative used his Facebook account as a platform to express his belief that gays and lesbians should be killed. The representative, Mr. Andy Gibson, is refusing to apologize…and why should he. A petition on Change.org is calling for Mr. Gipson to apologize and meet with Unity MS and the Mississippi Safe Schools Coalition. Quite frankly, I don't care for his apology. It would be empty and useless.
Meeting with advocacy groups such as Unity MS and the Mississippi Safe Schools Coalition are things a representative of the people should do willingly, not for a photo op as an act of contrition.
Now, don’t misunderstand me, what Rep. Gipson said is deplorable, but it’s his right to say it and he meant it. If he apologizes for the statement the sentiment is not expunged from the records. His opinions will not have changed. He will still think gay and lesbian people should be killed.
I am tired of petitions asking homophobes, racists, etc to apologize and meet with a group or coalition. Let's just get them out of elected office and any positions of power. I don't need hollow apologies. I need you out of office. If you can't respect the principles of this country and progress, you need to be at home not dictating policy.
Rep. Gipson has shown us who he is and we should believe him. His website says he stands on the principles of integrity, leadership, and vision. He defines integrity as “doing the right thing even when it isn't the easiest path.” For him leadership means simply listing positions he has held. Vision is working alongside other leads to help “cast a positive vision for the future, for our children and grandchildren.”
Mr. Gipson’s statements run unabashedly counter to his supposed values. There is nothing visionary about invoking the word of God to call for the deaths of innocent citizens, some of whom are the constituents he was elected to represent. There is no difficulty in spouting hate for gays and lesbians in one of the most conservative states, where the legislature and citizenry often actively work to limit the rights of gay and lesbian Mississippians. Although, Mr. Gipson can now say he is the leader of reckless legislators, fulfilling his view of leadership. More importantly, there is nothing Christian about his statements.
I am tired of “Christians” imposing their beliefs on the rest of us. From my years in a Southern Baptist church, I don’t remember anyone teaching me that God wants me to kill someone. In fact, a commandment from God says, ‘Thou shall not kill.” Church teaches that no man has the right or ability to stand in judgment of anyone.
It is clear from his statements that Mr. Gipson cannot be an effective representative and an apology will not change that. Mr. Gipson has the right to believe what he wants, no matter how deplorable. However, he has made it clear he cannot uphold the basic principles of this country. He does not respect the citizens he is sworn to represent. As a public servant you don’t have the luxury of only representing the people you like. Your job is to do what is best for all citizens, even the ones you don’t like.
Mr. Gipson will not fulfill this difficult duty, despite what his website says. The only petition that needs signatures is the one demanding Mr. Gipson’s immediate resignation.
Let’s stop asking for insincere apologies and instead start asking for resignations.
