Gee Cross Well Dressing 2015

Yesterday, 13 July, along with the community I was proud to be part of the 2015 Gee Cross Well Dressing event. This year, in its 16th year, taking in six well dressings decorated by local community groups (including the Gee Cross WI) and local schools.

Although not quite blue sky above, the weather was warm and thankfully there was no rain. The weather pretty much perfect then to see some great art work and hear of the work of local schools and groups in making the dressings - all of which were very impressive.

The ‘march’ was lead by Denton Brass Band, who were nothing short of fantastic. This was followed by a service at Hyde Chapel, which as always was fun, entertaining and full of learning.

Supporting Young People in Tameside with Apprenticeships

I am a firm believer in Apprenticeships, I wrote last year about my love of apprenticeships and the chances they offer young people in Tameside. Today with 764,000 unemployed 16-24 year olds, I think we need to do more to encourage Apprenticeships, both in terms of those being offered and helping young people to find them.

Tameside Labour's #15for15 plan includes two key pledges in this area, 1) Youth Jobs (6 months paid employment for any young person who is unemployed or not in training) and 2) the Tameside Enterprise Scheme (Supporting small businesses that invest in Tameside and mentor local young people).

By working with businesses, we can help them to work with and for the community - not just be another business in the street. Being part of the community means not only helping young people (as in this case) but will also lead to being part of community events and talking about skills needs both with the council and local educational establishments. It's about the long term vision of Tameside and not simply a push for a few years.

With 16.9% of 16-24's being economically inactive, I want to ensure Tameside (and the whole country) does more to ensure Young People today are not a "forgotten generation" but instead are trained and educated to lead this country economically in years to come. Apprenticeships are a huge part of that solution in my eyes. Helping these young people and the thousands of young people who today are claiming JSA because they can't find a job, this is why I support Tameside Labour's 15 Pledges for 2015 - #15for15.
