Sandell fires Blues to 2nd
A first-half brace from Andy Sandell earned Wycombe Wanderers their sixth away win of the season as they leapfrogged next weekend's opponents Rotherham into second place in the npower League Two table.
The visitors had fallen behind to a perfectly executed Gavin McCallum volley but struck back moments later when Imps keeper Joe Anyon was deceived by a long-range Sandell free kick.
The Blues were then awarded a penalty as winger Kevin Betsy was scythed down by Moses Swaibu. Unfortunately Betsy had to be stretchered off following the challenge and it went from bad to worse when Ben Strevens saw his spot kick saved by Anyon.
The Chairboys were left wondering how crucial that miss would be but would still enter the break in front. Following a Matt Bloomfield corner mayhem ensued in the Lincoln penalty area before Sandell stooped to head in his 7th goal of the season and become the side's outright league leading scorer.
The swirling wind conditions throughout made the game a fairly disjointed affair but manager Gary Waddock will be pleased with the resolute defensive performance by his side. They were rarely threatened by the Imps and even a late switch to 4-3-3 failed to unsettle the Blues.
Stuart Beavon could even have made things much more comfortable but his header looped over Anyon's crossbar.
It was a fantastic day for the Blues who saw a number of key promotion rivals drop points elsewhere. Rotherham were defeated 2-1 at home to Southend, Port Vale lost by the same scoreline away at Crewe, Bury and Shrewsbury could only manage draws and both Cheltenham and Torquay were defeated.
