Historical Time Period: Yayoi - Meiji Periods (300 BCE-1912 CE)
Hairstyle Name: Anesan-kaburi (姉さん被り) lit. “Older Sister’s Veil” OR Katsura-tsutsumi (鬘-包み) lit. “Hairpiece Bundle”
It needs to be said that all the previous hairstyles (soukei, toujounikei, koukei, yurimage, houkei, and kankanokei) were only popular and common among the aristocrats and nobles of the Asuka and Nara periods. The non-aristocratic people of Japan often wore their hair tied back in ponytails down the center of their backs or use furoshiki clothes to create a simple turban style as shown above. This was the common hairstyles for many until the onset of the Edo period, and well into the Meiji period in some locations.
