Vrijdag 4 december – Een wel heel bijzonder toeval. Na een lang online beeldgesprek trekt een dame in Oxford een boek uit de kast. Ze zegt: ‘dit is hèt boek voor jou’. Direct daarna stap ik op de fiets om het boek te bestellen bij de lokale boekhandel. Helaas lukt dat niet omdat de aangesloten importeurs het niet leveren. Weer thuis zit ik even later met mijn broer aan de koffie als er een pakketje wordt afgeleverd. Ik maak het open en kijk naar het boek dat mij minder dan een uur daarvoor via mijn beeldscherm werd getoond. Het pakket blijkt afkomstig van een vriendin uit de buurt die het boek zag staan in de bibliotheek van haar overleden echtgenoot en dacht ‘dit is een boek voor Ruurd’. De overleden echtgenoot en de echtgenoot van de dame in Oxford staan beide in contact met één van de auteurs: Jonathan – de zoon van Jonas. Ik schrijf bewust ‘staan’, want daar ben ik nu wel van overtuigd.

As I have just written to a friend, it feels rather decadent to be chopping vegetables for roasting on a Tuesday afternoon. For me it’s more of a weekend task especially on a Sunday when a big enough batch will be done to last a few days. The upside is the ability to complete the task to a backdrop of online stories. If the internet didn’t exist it would be the radio. I haven’t owned a TV for the last 2 decades. That is not to say I would like to be without my daily dose of telecommunications.
