Hi! I stumbled upon your post about moving to Chicago. And I have been wanting to move to a city but an affordable city. I live in South Jersey at the moment. I am a bank teller and I live only 45 min away from Philadelphia(which I love), but I just need to get away or I want to try a different city and I hear Chicago is a great one to start. I have been doing quite a bit of research. But, do you have any good advice as to where I should look? Or any other important suggestions I should know?
I am always happy to help people move to Chicago! I've lived there most of my life, about 18 years. I'm in St. Louis now and moving back to Chicago next month. I've lived primarily on the south suburbs, but I'll be in the southwest suburbs after this.
Each area of Chicago is a neighborhood and each neighborhood has its own personality. Here's a handy site on each of the neighborhoods which shows them on a map and gives you information about each. You can kind of get a feel for which is going to be best for you, based on your personality and maybe your heritage, race, or economic status.
One site I recommend checking before you move—and don't let this be off-putting—is the map of homocides. This will help you see which neighborhoods downtown are the safest.
The south side is going to be cheaper, but it's not as safe. The north side and downtown are ridiculously expensive. Everyone shies away from the suburbs if they're moving from out of state, but I recommend them. 30 minutes from the city in Chicago is actually very, very close and our public transport system is phenomenal and goes quite far outside of the city itself, so getting downtown for work is easy (and there's work available outside the city too). Basically you have to not think of it as Chicago, but rather as Chicagoland. The city sort of spills over its borders.
Of course, if you do move, you'll have to change your username. ;)
