Life Onboard: Life on board as Linen keeper/Laundry Master
Let's talk about the basic only from my last contract in Asia.
06:30 AM – 07:00 AM ➡ Wake up, shower, uniform check.
07:00 AM – 07:30 AM ➡ Breakfast at crew mess.
07:30 AM – 12:00 NN ➡ Management quick meeting and morning duties:
Receive and record linen deliveries from the laundry.
Prepare linen (bedsheets, duvet covers, pillowcase, towels)
Distribute clean linen or towels to deck attendants.
Checking collected soiled in the laundry area.
Keep stockroom tidy and organized.
12:00 NN – 01:30 PM ➡ Lunch break + quick rest.
01:30 PM - 04:30 PM ➡ Shore leave or Sleep
04:30 PM - 06:30 PM ➡ Afternoon duties:
Continue issuing linen as needed (housekeeping request extras).
Do linen inventory check (update records).
Arrange stock to make sure everything is easy to access.
Last Christmas 2024.
Assist during cabin change-over or turnaround day if required (busy during embarkation/disembarkation!).
06:30 PM - 07:00 PM ➡ Dinner break.
07:00 PM – 08:00 PM (if assigned) ➡ Evening standby or support duties:
Handle urgent linen requests (e.g., special events, extra towels for guests, emergency clean-ups).
Final check of linen room before closing shift.
08:00 PM onwards ➡ Free time: relax, crew activities, call home, gym (I hope next contract)
10:00 PM – Lights out / sleep.

✅ Schedules vary — linen keepers usually work split shifts depending on ship operations. ✅ Busy times: turnaround days, special events, or when guests change frequently. ✅ You might also assist in loading/unloading laundry.
🌊 Free Time as Linen Keeper Onboard
✅ Rest & Recharge
Take a nap in my cabin usually I do it after eating lunch. Don't judge me.
Listen to music or watch downloaded shows/movies. There's a lot of movie onboard on our crew cabin. I love watching them all then they make new set of movies again after one month :)
Call or video chat with my family. We have free messages for every crew for chatting only but if you want video call you can buy any time.
✅ Socialize
Hang out with crewmates in the crew bar, mess, or recreation room. My last contract we there's a majong board in one of our cafe some of my friends teach me how to play.
Join organized crew activities (karaoke, games, sports). Last time I sign up for bumper cars with few friends.
✅ Stay Active
Use the crew gym or jogging track (if available). Next contract I do it. Hahaha!
Join group exercise (Zumba, yoga, etc. — many ships offer this).
✅ Personal Care
Do laundry, usually I do it after duty at night.
Organize your cabin, we clean every before drill because cabin inspection every drill.
Read books or study (some crew study for exams or certifications). There's a library in the cafe on my last contract. I read but I didn't finish it.
✅ Explore (on port days)
If you’re free, go ashore to explore the port city or do some shopping. That's the favorite part of my life on board. SHORELEAVE! Exploring ports will be good and fun especially shopping.
Join crew shore excursions (if allowed).
⏰ When is free time usually?
After duty hours (e.g. after 8 PM, depending on shift).
Between split shifts (e.g. after morning duties, before afternoon/evening tasks).
On quieter sea days or after turnover is complete.
⚓ Challenges at Work (Linen Keeper)
✅ Heavy workload on turnaround days
When guests disembark and new ones arrive, there’s a big demand for clean linen. It can be physically tiring and stressful, especially when time is limited.
✅ Stock shortages / missing items
Sometimes linen supplies don’t arrive on time, or you run low on certain items (like bath towels) It’s challenging to meet all requests without enough stock.
✅ Tight storage space
The linen room is usually small, and keeping it organized takes effort. With large quantities of linen, it’s hard to move around or find what you need quickly.
✅ Urgent last-minute requests
Housekeeping may suddenly need extra linen for emergencies, spills, or special events. You need to respond fast while still managing your regular tasks.
✅ Physical demands
Carrying heavy bags of soiled or clean linen, working in tight spaces, standing or walking for long hours — it can cause fatigue or back pain.
✅ Heat / laundry smell
The linen room can get hot, especially near laundry areas. The smell of soiled linen or chemicals might be unpleasant at times.
✅ Communication issues
Sometimes there’s confusion between departments (e.g. what was requested vs. what was delivered), especially if people speak different languages.
✅ Strict hygiene standards
I must ensure linen is handled properly — no cross-contamination between clean and dirty items. This adds pressure during busy times.
⚓ Coping Strategies for Linen Keeper Challenges
✅ Plan and prioritize tasks
At the start of my shift, I list urgent linen needs (e.g. cabin changeovers) so I don’t get overwhelmed. I tackle the biggest jobs first.
✅ Keep stock organized
I arrange linen so it’s easy to access — e.g. group by type (towels, sheets), label shelves, and rotate stock (I used older items first). This saves my time during busy hours.
✅ Communicate clearly
When receiving or giving linen, I confirm the quantity and type. If unsure about a request, I ask for clarification right away to avoid mistakes.
✅ Pace yourself physically
I use correct lifting techniques (bend knees, keep back straight). If loads are heavy, I ask for help or use carts/trolleys where possible.
✅ Stay hydrated and take short breaks
Even 5-minute rests help, especially on turnaround days. I drink water regularly — working near laundry or in small rooms can get hot.
✅ Prepare for emergencies
I keep a small reserve of essential linen (e.g. extra towels and linens) so I can respond fast to last-minute requests.
✅ Stay positive and flexible
Some days will be harder, but keeping a good attitude and working as a team helps. Many linen keepers find that humor and teamwork make the job easier.
✅ Care for your health off duty
Stretch, exercise lightly, and rest well during free time. A healthy body handles physical work better.
At the end of the day you will survive because you have to. It's your dream job and it's making good money so work, embrace it.
