The longer that the silence dragged on, the worse he felt about telling the truth. He absently rubbed at hip, eyes fixed to the ground so that he didn’t dare chance a look in Mal’s direction - he didn’t like the thought of reading an expression he couldn’t do anything about. 

That didn’t stop him hearing his heartbeat, judging by how fast it was racing he was scared. That was the only explantion. It made sense really, he wasn’t completely human and that was a terrifying, unknown prospect despite the fact that Chase meant no harm whatsoever.

“I want you to say that it doesn’t matter to you,” eyes finally dragged up from the ground to look at him, of all the people he didn’t think Mal would look at him differently. “That you still... want to be with me..”

Mornings like this, he realised, were something he was growing to enjoy more and more. It was hard to ignore the way his heart raced as he looked up at Ren, a picture, even with mussed up hair.
