˖᯽ ݁˖ PAC reading: what is in your way of leveling up?
— 1,2,3
hi darlings! so sorry I haven’t posted a PAC in a while, but I was making the navigation on my blog and I felt the urge to do one. this reading was done with one of my favorite decks, and my first time using the crow deck on here - so if that’s significant for you in any way STAYY!! also, side note, I started this reading at 13:13 and ended at 14:14, isn’t that fun? as always take what resonates, love you <3
PILE ONE ؛༊
page of swords, page of cups, knight of swords rx, seven of pentacles, the lovers rx, eight of wands rx
I immediately felt the need to put on something that covers me more before I even pulled a card out. Tell me, pile one, are you hiding? Are you a little shy or reserved? If so, you are holding yourself back!! All black could be significant - either in your fashion choices or it could be the need to protect your energy. With the page of swords I see that your journey hasn’t been easy. You might’ve faced more losses than normal these past few months/weeks/days. You might’ve been feeling stagnant, but the time to take action is now! Make sure to keep communicating your needs and wants with yourself and the people around you.
You are either on the younger side, or have a very youthful soul. Please don’t let fear lock the wonder and beauty you hold inside your heart. It deserves to see the light of day. I feel like you should let your creative side out, without focusing so much on what others might think or say. You might’ve tried a lot of different things in the realm of school/work and none of it has worked out for you. That is because you’re too scared to pursue what you really want to. Let that fear GO!! There is no need for it anymore. Stay open minded. Vivid or lucid dreams might be of great significance to you. You might use your dreamworld as an escape - use it instead as inspiration on how to shape your life.
Air and water signs could be significant, especially Cancer and Pisces placements. I get a very energetic energy from you, but a very chaotic energy as well. You are probably a type B person (no shame babes, me too). Either this energy is going into so many directions at once that it’s leaving you drained or it’s bottled up inside yourself and leaving you feeling anxious and wound up. You might miss some direction in your life, you have all the energy but none of the ideas on where to spend that energy. You have to reflect, take a moment to stand still and really plan ahead this time. That might not be your strong suit, or could even be something uncomfortable for you, but the payout will be grand.
You need to focus your energy on something specific and long term. Be truly honest with yourself, don’t force anything. Be honest with yourself in the reasoning for your choices, both future and past. Especially past, I’m hearing. Shadow work is calling your name right now! Even though you have this insane amount of energy within you, you have to slow down. There could be outside influences and delays, take them as a blessing and take this time to really self reflect. The path ahead of you is still foggy, to clear this and see where you should go next you have to know yourself better. Meditate, write, ponder. Don’t try to manifest everything that comes to mind, don’t spend your beautiful energy on just anything. You can go anywhere you want to in life, but because of this it’s very easy for you to end up somewhere you actually don’t want to be. Try to reign in the impulses, and regroup. I believe in you.
PILE TWO ᥫ᭡.
five of pentacles, the empress rx, the chariot, page of swords rx, knight of cups
Immediately getting a lot of information from you, pile two! Water and earth placements, groups of three, your job/working in general, and orange (the color or the fruit) could all be significant to you. Are you neglecting a part of your life? The part that’s less than desirable to you, the one that’s maybe a little messy? You might be feeling stagnant in relationships right now (any relationships, familial, friendships, your love life, etc). You might be feeling lost lately. Focus less on the material and more on the connections you make.
I get the feeling you’ve been more on edge lately, easier to provoke or generally more annoyed at people and things around you. Small mistakes grind your gears, and you could feel like they’re happening more and more lately. There’s a big emphasis on relationships in your life. Your heart is shielded, you have a difficulty connecting with people and with nature. Check your chart, and check your earth placements. The empress is calling out to you asking that you go inward and be creative. Only when you accept yourself and direct your hearts loving energy inward, will you be free to radiate love and compassion outward to others. You must learn to harness your aggression, you are in control. Go forward with confidence, don’t waste your energy stuck thinking about the small mistakes you’ve made. You’ve already thought on them more than necessary, don’t make yourself sound like a broken record.
Make sure not to make your decisions too hastily, and jumping into deep waters with no experience. Take your time, wade out bit by bit and make yourself comfortable. Don’t talk big game where you can’t back it up. Think carefully about your words and the message you want to put out into the world. Your voice is very powerful. Deliver your message calmly.
You are gifted with creativity and intuition. But this leaves you with a tendency to get swept up in dreams, leaving you unable to go through with your plans. Stop wasting your energy, my dove. There might be someone who will enter your life in the coming months and help you with this, a creative thinker who will help you with a project. Or this could be you offering assistance to someone without direction, leveraging your own creative power. Make sure to really open your heart, no matter how scary it is. Go out on a walk in nature, send a message to an old friend to reconnect.
PILE THREE ꫂ❁
judgement rx, two of pentacles rx, the emperor, eight of cups, five of pentacles
This feels like a very heavy pile from the get go. Perhaps your family/home situation is oppressive or caging you in. You aren’t in control, and it’s working in your detriment. Please check your finances, you could be behind on bills or have missed a payment. Either way the loss of focus that comes with the two of pentacles in reverse often suggests financial instability. Fire and earth signs could be significant. More specifically Capricorn and Aries placements.
You are a leader, a commander. Perhaps you are out of your element currently? Maybe someone is dictating what you do or wear or say. Either way I’m sensing someone is trying to control you. This doesn’t work well since it’s not your natural way of being, but it could be causing a lot of miscommunication or stagnation in your life currently. It’s taking your focus. Don’t let this person or situation drain you.
You could be closed off or private, not sharing much of your life with the people around you. Get a diary. Look inward and discover what it is you want from life. The eight of cups suggests looking into your shadow self, and not suppressing it. Leaving behind the material wealth and possessions. Gaining the strength to walk away, no matter how hard or scary it may seem. It will take considerable strength and effort to leave that which doesn’t serve you anymore behind. It may be necessary to achieve true happiness.
You are stronger than you think. Even when all appears lost there are still opportunities if we look for them. Five of pentacles once again reiterates that you shouldn’t focus on material possessions, but your relationships. To yourself and your shadow self, as well as friends, family, acquaintances, etc. You are battling headwind right now unable to see that relief is just a short distance away. If you are in a place of financial instability right now, don’t dwell on it too much. There is so much more to life than money or things. Focus on experiences and feelings, this will feed your soul.
notes — helloooo! I’m honestly kinda nervy to be posting this because I haven’t written fanfiction in like, two years, so please don’t judge me. but if you’re here, hi! wilkommen! bienvenue! welcome! (sorry couldn’t help myself) just wanted to quickly say, just in case you didn’t come from the masterlist, that reader does have a physical description because it’s part of the plot! also this wasn’t proofread so if there’s any spelling or grammar mistakes don’t @ me (I’ll throw the English isn’t my first language card) NEways I hope you have fun reading, lots of love!!! and lmk what you thought <33
series masterlist
You were lucky to be born a twin. Not necessarily because of all the things people say of twins, how they’re a friend for life and your other half and all that, it was rather that yours proved your legitimacy. His long white hair and singular violet eye proved that even though you looked plain, you were in fact a princess of the realm all the same.
Your mother had always scrutinized your nephews for looking plain, speaking of their bastardy and the evil inherently in their blood because of it. She would sit with you and your older sister Helaena, mostly talking aloud to herself and picking at her nails, but with your sister in a world of her own, you couldn’t help but pick up her words.
You remember asking her one night, as she was tucking you in tightly after dinner. You’d shared it with the whole family, your oldest sister Rhaenyra, her husband ser Laenor and her children had all joined, and as you sat next to your mother you saw the look of disdain in her eyes whenever one of the plain looking boys would laugh too loud, or make a noise. Something in her eyes told you she didn’t think they belonged there, how she was only mad that they existed so loudly so close to her with no consequences.
So when you asked her that night; “Mother, am I a bastard?” , you were glad to see a look of mortification paint her features instead of the same one she reserved for your nephews. The hand stroking your hair stopped as she let out a gasp, “My darling, of course not. Where do you get these ideas from?”
You looked up into her eyes sadly, almost not daring to speak, lest you upset your mother further, but she resumes the raking of her fingers through your hair and you relent. “It is only that..” looking away from your mother’s saucer-like eyes and worried brow down to your hands, fidgeting with the edge of your blanket, you take a breath before continuing.
“Well, you always talk about how plain Rhaenyra’s children look, I hear Aegon whisper about it.. about how they’re bastards.” You look up at your mother again, seeing understanding settle over her face little by little. “I do not look like Aegon, or Helaena, or even Aemond, even though twins are meant to resemble one another.. I only worry I might be a bastard too.” You finish, anxiously trying to get your words out as your mothers hand shifts from your auburn hair to hold your face softly, letting her thumb caress your cheek comfortingly.
“You need not worry, my sweet. I understand your worries, but they are not needed.” She shushes you, straightening her back slightly, fixing her posture, before continuing. “While you are not a bastard, you do not look like a Targaryen.” They are hard words to hear, and you almost wince, but you know your mother doesn’t mean it in a cruel way. It is only that she is a devout woman, a woman of virtue, a woman of the seven, and women of the seven should not lie. “You are right to be worried about claims of bastardy, their coloring is the reason everyone in this castle knows Rhaenyra’s litter is one of sin.” She spits, you hang off her every word, wondering when she will get to the part that will cease your worries. “But you, my sweet, were born a twin. Aemond is your twin brother, you are one in the same, connected.” She rests her free hand on your beating heart, pressing down trying to make you understand her words. “You and Aemond could not come from two different fathers, do you understand? You were born at the same time, created at the same time. Because he is undoubtedly a Targaryen, you are too.”
You did not fully understand it then, but you do now. You do as you look around the throne room, clad in a green dress, standing with your siblings as the Sea Snake’s brother, Ser Vaemond Velaryon, openly questions your nephew’s legitimacy in front of the entire court.
You have always been told you resemble your mother most out of all her children. It’s not really a competition when all your siblings share the same white blonde hair and eyes in varying shades of purple, and you look like a Hightower who lost her way from Oldtown. That combined with never claiming a dragon, as your twin brother did, seemed to be enough for people to decide you take after your mother.
And in a way, you do. You are anxious, you pick at the skin of your fingers until they’re raw, you bite your nails, you pull your hair, all things your mother does but chastises you for in the same breath. But you are not holy, you are not devout, you are not righteous as she is. You seem to have taken all your parents’ worst qualities. Your mother’s anxiousness, and your father’s passivity, made for quite a stagnant personality. You were not much like your twin brother, you did not look the same, you did not react to things the same, you did not want the same. You did not enjoy swordsmanship, or jousting. The only thing you had in common, the only thing in which you two were the same, was the abhorrent amount of books the both of you read, though the genres were very different.
He preferred history books, books about great conquests and battle, books about law and order, about treasury and maths. Books that would bore even a maester to death, you’d recon. He used books for knowledge, to advance himself, probably in some way to prove that he was worthy of something. You, however, felt you had little need for any of that. You did not have the things he did, did not have the ambition he did to prove yourself. You did, however, feel the need to escape. Escape your head, escape your thoughts, escape your reality, for what use does a plain princess with no dragon have with books of law, of coin and conquest, when you would never have any chance to do anything with that knowledge.
So you escaped instead in tales of romance, of betrayal and reconciliation, of blessings from the gods, of knights coming to save plain princesses from their plain existence. Of reach knights all vying for one woman’s hand, because she is so beautiful they all instantly fall in love with her. Of how the most gallant and charming one wins, and swoops her away from her family to join his, and find happiness there. And when the last page is turned, and you set another book aside, you feel a twinge of guilt simmer in your chest, for you know your family loves you, you know your mother loves you, yet you cannot help but want to run away and be around unremarkable people, so you could finally cease to feel so inadequate. Instead you open up another book to repeat the cycle of suppressed emotions and thoughts, because burying is easier than facing.
You let your eyes glide over the room, over all the people standing around and stopping at your father, face half covered by a golden mask, sitting on the iron throne above it all. Your sister, standing below your father with her children, was wearing a most gorgeous black dress, the collar cut quite low and embroidered with reds and golds making it look as if it were on fire, you admired it. You know you should probably be paying attention to the things going on around you in the throne room, things besides your sister’s dress or your the way you could see the rot of your father face peek out from the side of the mask from the angle you were looking at, but you couldn’t. Not when this dispute could change everything, not when your nephews were being accused of something you knew you would be accused of too, if only you hadn’t had Aemond beside you in the cradle. It made your chest ache.
You hadn’t seen your nephews since they cut out your brother’s eye on Driftmark. You never really blamed them for it, not like your mother or Aemond did. When you were a little girl you liked to spend time with Baela and Rhaena whenever you saw them, so at their mother’s funeral you made sure to grab at their hands extra tight, and kiss their temples with extra care, murmuring soft prayers in their ears, ones your mother taught you. They told you then, of how Rhaena would get to try and claim her mother’s dragon, Vhagar, and how if it didn’t work, they were sure they could convince their grandsire that you deserved to try right after her. So when your twin brother came to you with his plan, you tried to shoot him down, tried telling him that if he was meant to ride Vhagar, she’d also let him claim her after Rhaena had her rightful try, but your brother was never one to heed your advice. You remembered standing next to Aemond that same night as his eye was being taken out to avoid risk of infection, holding his hand tightly as he wailed. You didn’t tell him ‘I told you so’ - only because your mother was right next to you both and had just cut your sister across the arm in retaliation, and it seemed a bad time to get on her nerves, lest you be next.
Your attention is returned to the room you stand in as Vaemond speaks once more, venom in his words as he looks up to your father’s half-obscured face. “My house survived the doom, and a thousand tribulations besides!” You watch as he flicks his gaze over to Lucerys, who looks frightened in turn, as he continues his speech. “And Gods be damned. I will not see it ended on the account of this-” he faltered a second, and you heard your uncle whisper from across the room ‘say it’ and you braced for the inevitable.
Slowly Vaemond’s face turns back to your father, his eyes almost shining in what you assume must be some sort of vengeance or satisfaction, if not fear to speak such treason in front of the king and his family. “Her children..” he began slowly, pausing, “are BASTARDS.” He shouts as some in the hall cower, others turning up their noses at the accusation, but you remained stick still, hands clasped tensely in front of your body as you try not to look away from Vaemond, try not to look towards him. You don’t notice the way your face has fallen into a glare, set on the Sea Snake’s brother as he spits his vile accusations.
“And she,” he continues slowly, letting every word sit by itself for a moment before the next falls from his treasonous lips. “Is. A. Whore.” Your father leans forward in his throne, rotting teeth bared and his singular eye in a slit so small, so viscous, you can hardly see its color. Unsheathing his dagger, “I will have your tongue for that.” He says, but before anyone can do much of anything you hear a loud whack from your other side, looking back to see Vaemond sliced across the face, falling to the ground with the top of his head falling to the other side. Your eyes widened, your fingers latch on to each other and pull at their seams, you stifle a gasp. Your sister next to you slaps her hands over her ears, as she so often did, and turned away in an instant, eyes as wide as dinner plates as Aegon reaches across her to get her away from the violence. Your twin brother takes a swift step back, his fingers grabbing your arm instinctively to shift you back with him, away from the danger. The danger being your uncle Daemon, standing over the body while leaning on dark sister, blood dripping from the blade to the ground in a satisfying tap.
“He can keep his tongue.” Your uncle says, looking down at the ground, at the corpse, in a self satisfied movement, almost smirking down at the death laid before him. It sickens you.
“Disarm him!” Your grandsire shouts from the other side, knights and lords alike all pulling their swords in defense as your uncle steps back casually, letting the blade of his sword rub between the material of his black gamberson without a care in the world. “No need,” he says, walking himself out of the room, leaving behind the stunned masses. You still hadn’t looked away from the body crumpled in a heap on the floor.
Daemon was never fond of his brother’s second wife, never liked her Hightower children, how they sullied the House of The Dragon’s Valyrian blood with their common disposition. Most of the children were easy enough to overlook. At least they looked the part, no matter what diluted commoner blood swam through their veins. All except for you, the Hightower Bitch’s favorite mutt. You looked undeniably plain, like a Hightower, so it made sense your dragon egg wouldn’t hatch. He himself would’ve had his suspicions of your parentage were it not that you were not born alone, but with a dragonrider by your side. Yes, it seemed your brother would always need to carry the burden of legitimizing you, his plain sister, in the eyes of the court, in the eyes of your family.
He found he did not care nearly as much that Rhaenyra’s first three children, the ones she supposedly had with Laenor, looked so plain. Of course a built in love for the children, at least a little bit, was because he loved their mother so dearly, but another part was completely earned by the boys themselves. Dragonriders, all three. They spoke Valyrian with him as best they could, wanted to learn, wanted to prove themselves. That drive, that fire, he had respect for. You, however, did not have that. You didn’t need to prove anything, for your twin brother was all the proof you needed. He worked hard on his studies, he spent hours in the tiltyard, he claimed a dragon. The boy earned the family's respect. You coasted on it. It left an ever bitter taste in his mouth. He knows how you Hightowers are, cunning and conniving, always finding a way to get your way. It must not have taken a lot to convince your brother to do all the work for you. People always did say you took after your mother, perhaps all you had to do was spread your legs for him and, once again, let him do all the work. Daemon grinned to himself.
You’d always been an annoyance to him. Where your brother was loud, your sister was queer, and your twin was cold, you were simply there. Undeserving, lazy, unremarkable. A true stain on the tapestry of House Targaryen. You were his enemy, however he did not feel threatened by you as he did his other enemies before, no. People said you took after his brother in your peace, your tranquility and inner strength to ‘keep calm’. He knew it was all horseshit. He would not mistake your uninterest for so called peace. He would not let his guard down, for he knew, the most formidable enemies will have you underestimate them.
He knew his brother probably wouldn’t appreciate how he went about things today, he would probably tell him how reckless and destructive he was, how he made a fool of the crown. Daemon could not understand how Viserys could hold such anger towards him, because without Daemon, nothing would ever be done. He will not apologize for acting when his king remained immobile, while he struggled to keep hold of the dainty dagger atop his iron chair, for somebody must.
From his perch atop a balcony he has a good view of the throne room’s doors, how groups of people make their way out of the wretched room, followed by Vaemond’s still warm corpse being hoisted out by a couple gold cloaks. He watches the people, their faces, their mouths, the way they look concerned and shaken, like what Daemon did threw them off kilter. Weak, all of them. Too weak, apparently, to see what needed to be done, and too weak, surely, to carry it out as gallantly as he did.
The litter of Hightowers finally makes their way out of the open doors, Aegon, the drunken fool, no longer holding his sister-wife and opting instead for a flask he most likely procured from somewhere on the inside of his cloak, looking left and right quickly before taking a swig. Aemond had a scrutinizing look on his face as he stared at his brother, walking behind in open disdain. It almost made Daemon smirk again, seeing his nephew share his sentiment so wholeheartedly, his disgust for the sloth in Aegon’s disposition.
Then a flash of auburn among the spun gold and white of your siblings, you. It seemed you had yet to cease your theatrics, holding on to your sister in mock-sympathy, gliding your filthy hand across her arm in a display of comfort so repulsive in its insincerity it almost made him recoil. The nobles around you look to you with sympathy, a look of thanks for taking care of their most sensitive princess, Helaena. There it is. The pious little act. Always making sure someone is watching.
This was your play, wasn’t it? He would've ignored you entirely, had you not wrapped yourself around Helaena like ivy around a dying tree. But this was exactly your plan, the only way you would ever be noticed amongst the divinity of House Targaryen. It’s what you did with your twin brother, and now your sister, he knows it’s what you did with his daughters when you were children.
He watches the unfortunate group go their separate ways, sees you slink away dragging Helaena with you up a set of stairs. He lingers for a while after, until the people filtering out of the throne room come few and far in between. With the sky turning purple behind him, he finally takes his leave.
The corridors are empty and hollow as you guide your sister, her arm gently but firmly in your grasp as you help her to her chambers. Most of the court must have retreated to their own quarters after your uncle’s display in the throne room. No one wants to stay near death too long. For a moment, you see it again — the wet sound of dark sister cutting through flesh, the crown of Vaemond's head striking the stone before the rest of him followed. Your stomach turns. You swallow hard and force the memory away. No matter how much the sight bothered you, as you looked over at Helaena, eyes still wide, hands still tight around her ears, murmuring to herself, you know it bothered her more.
As you finally reached her door you paid little mind to the guards stationed outside, as they always were, instead pushing open the thick wood and making sure your sister was safe and alone once again, where, you hoped, nothing else would frighten her tonight. You softened your grip on her arm and she slipped out of your hold, pacing her room as you softly closed the door behind the both of you. You always thought her room was beautiful, though you always seemed drawn to the peculiar. The walls were decked out in beautiful tapestries of rolling green hills, golden and silver dragons floating high above the towns embroidered below. The faint sound of constant movement lingered in the room, from the jars of various sizes placed all around the chamber. Dragonflies, beetles, worms, centipedes, ants, all locked away for her amusement. Many maids had refused to serve the princess in her chambers, “She’s mad!” they’d said. "She speaks to things that aren't there," one maid whispered once, "And she keeps vermin like pets.” But you had never minded, you had only smiled. They were butterflies. Ladybugs. Silk moths. Living things Helaena loved because they asked nothing of her. Who were you to judge her for something so innocent?
You slowly make your way over to your sister again, taking good care not to startle her in her fragile state, slowly helping her sink into the chaise in the middle of the room. Kneeling before her, you gently lift up the bottom of her dress, you can see splatters of blood near the front, making sure to fold it so Helaena wouldn’t see it and be reminded as you were of what had transpired not half an hour earlier. You can hear her mumble to herself above you as you make easy work of the laces of her boots, untangling them patiently. She says something a bit louder and you cock your head up at her, you hope you give her a comforting look as you hum in question to hear her repeat it.
“The dragonflies stop moving after thunder.” She repeats, her eyes set in a look of great importance, seemingly looking through you, she wasn’t fully present. But you didn’t blame her. You simply continued your ministrations on her laces until her left boot slipped off without any resistance, keeping your eyes on her all the while. You dare a look at the dragonflies in her jars, they do seem still compared to some other critters. “They’re sleeping.” you settle on, beginning to unlace her second boot with the same attention and care you gave to the first. “No,” Helaena replies, you look back up to her, her eyes have shifted from you, to the Dragonflies in her windowsill, softly tracing patterns into her thighs with her pointer finger. Her gaze shifts back to yours, locking eyes with you once more, more present this time, not looking through you anymore. “They’re waiting.”
You took your time removing your sister’s outer garments and taking out the braids in her hair, softly letting your fingers dance through the perfect white strands, until, slowly, she calmed down enough to fall asleep. You don’t know how long you spent by her side, you figure it was as much to help your sister as to distract yourself from what you’d seen. But now there was no distraction left. You wandered the corridors of Maegor’s Holdfast like a ghost, dress billowing behind you as the cold night air made its way through the narrow passageways with a shrill sound. As you reach your door two guards step aside, opening it for you as you let out a meek ‘thank you’.
Your room is less grand than your sister’s, though it looks a lot bigger without all the jars everywhere. A light green sheer canopy falls over your bed, and it’s the only thing you see right now. A cocoon to hide in, a place that obstructed the view of you from those who looked at you and saw only disappointment. You take a lot less care in ripping your own dress off, not wanting to see the splatters of blood most likely staining the bottom of your skirts as they did Helaena’s.
You maneuver yourself between the curtains hanging over your bed, letting yourself settle into the cold there, curling into yourself, leaning against the headboard. If you focused hard enough you could imagine the wood at your back was another person, stroking your hair and comforting you, too. You looked up at the canopy, the way it bunched at the part attached to your ceiling, the way the pleats gathered, and tried to distract yourself. It didn’t work.
Your mind kept dragging you back there: the frightened faces of the court, the metallic tang in the air — thick enough to taste — the mangled corpse at your feet. But your mind wandered to other places as well. You think of your nephews, how frightened would they have been today? Little Lucerys, watching his inheritance nearly slip from his grasp. Jacaerys, forced once again to stand silently while strangers debated whether he deserved to bear his own name, whether he belonged to the family he'd been born into. You wonder, too, had you not had Aemond, would they accuse you? And you know the answer, you know what would have become of you. To them, a plain girl with no dragon could not be a Targaryen.
Yes, as you looked up at your ceiling, as the green canopy hung above you like a linen sheet, for one terrible moment all you could see was the cloth the servants had drawn over Vaemond's body, and once again, you felt it being reiterated in your brain; you were lucky to be born a twin.

I heard “the one”. they just want to hold your face in their hands and study you exactly like the page is studying his pentacle on the card. this makes me feel so giddy, it feels like a young kind of love. puppy love. puppies could be seriously significant, you may have gotten a puppy recently or it might be your first relationship. this person wants to message you or get in contact with you. I feel like they think you are busy, and they might feel a little locked out of your life. they definitely put you on a pedestal, so they might have never had a relationship. they definitely have a love confession ready, I see fire placements too, especially Leo Venus could be significant. you might do glamour magic and/or worship Aphrodite, because I’m getting just beautiful energy from you. your sp really thinks very highly of you, and they want to share this with you. they want to win you.

dear pile two, you are definitely a fun bunch. you guys definitely like to party and/or have an abundant social life, because I can see your sp feel a little unsure of you in this connection. it’s definitely because of their own insecurities, you could have a lot of admirers, which makes them feel inadequate or they compare themselves to the others. emerald could be significant, or wearing a ring/rings with prominent stones. you’re an eye-catcher. birds and feathers could be significant as well. but, your sp is coming your way with an offer because of this. they want to make you theirs before anyone else gets to. they could gift you jewelry, wearing gold could be significant as well — or they may get you gold jewelry, but you only wear silver, lol! either way it comes from the heart, and it is an offer of love/romance. they are racing towards you, they are determined and they are ready to defeat any of your other suitors. so get ready pile two!

pile four, I’m getting a bit of heavier energy here. I’m hearing “ground yourself” so please take a moment in the coming week to meditate or ground yourself. I feel like your sp is a mirror of you, and you might be someone who struggles with accepting help. they see you as someone mysterious, and maybe a loner? you might not have a big friend group but a couple of really close friends instead. I feel like you might not have met this person in real life yet, you could be online friends. either that or you talk primarily through social media or phone calls, but I’m hearing text messages or DMs. they are definitely the type to yearn, but I feel like you want them to chase you, when they mirror you. so you might have to take the initiative in this connection if you want it to form into anything more. I feel a very heavy energy, so you could be coming out of a rough patch or are stressed/overworked right now. if you go to them with your problems there will be a future with them. I can’t say this will be an easy thing, and you might have to do a lot of inner healing. you could have been in toxic relationships in the past of prone to falling into destructive cycles. please take care of yourself, and let yourself be taken care of by the people around you that care about you. focusing on yourself and letting that help in will bring your sp closer.
significant: hospitals (you could be a nurse/doctor), candy, sweet tooth, childish gambino, unfinished tasks, online presence, social media, phone notifications, addictions, crowded places, trains, rain
summary — If it wasn’t for your brother, you’d be shunned. You do not look Targaryen, you do not act Targaryen. You don’t ride a dragon or take people’s breaths away with your beautiful white hair and purple eyes. But is it not dragons which destroy each other? What exists in the space between? Are you the only one there?
pairing — Jacaerys Velaryon x Targtower!Aemond’s Twin!Reader
disclaimer — MC does have a physical description (long auburn/ginger hair and blue eyes) because it’s important to the plot that she looks like a Hightower — but no other descriptions. also use of Y/N (maybe unpopular opinion but I actually like when people use it instead of just dancing around the name)
warnings — canon typical violence, death, major character death, explicit language, targcest, 18+ themes and language, MDNI (individual warnings per chapter - also will keep adding tags while writing)
other tags — happy ending, (basically) strangers to lovers, slow burn, canon divergence, multiple POV, unreliable narrators all around, aged up characters: Aegon is 22, Helaena is 20, MC/Aemond and Jacaerys are 19, Daeron is 18, Lucerys is 15 (will keep adding more tags while writing)

PAC reading: what’s coming for you in October? ₊˚⊹ᰔ
— 1,2,3
hi lovelies, thank you all for the sweet messages on my first PAC reading! I got in a trance for this one (just smoked a lil and worked all day), so you know it’s good lol. the chain by Fleetwood Mac is significant for all of you, go listen!! (if that’s significant for you stay and read lol). sorry I’m rambling, please take care of yourself, take what resonates (these get really specific at some points lol). happy October everybody!
PILE ONE ⋆˚࿔
six of swords, two of pentacles, nine of swords, strength, knight of wands rx, the tower rx, five of wands, seven of wands
sweet pile one, you’re juggling a lot aren’t you? you might be traveling more than usual, perhaps you need to take a different route to school/work and it’s stressing you out. I can see public transport not working in your favor / roads being worked on. if that resonates then this is definitely for you. water/sea and sailing are also significant for this collective. you could live on an island? if you’re doubting things or unsure about something strength is coming this month, it might be in the form of an animal like a dog or pet. something is going to reinvigorate you in whatever you’re losing hope in. this could manifest in some instability at first before it can settle into something better and more beautiful. take time for yourself and stay grounded.
I see there’s definitely some discord in your relationships. this doesn’t have to be in a romantic way, it could be disagreements with friends or family - though I just got texted by my situationship, so I definitely feel like it leans more that way for this pile. there might be some competition in your relationship from outside energies. I see you coming out on top though. you already have the upper hand in the situation. there’s definitely people out there who are envious of you and this connection. cleanse your energy, and return everything to sender babes! every experience in life makes you stronger and smarter, you got this. “oh baby, baby, it’s a wild world”
significant: SKINS UK!!!, public transport / roadwork, islands, sailing, the sea, sailboats, traveling long(er) distances, dogs
PILE TWO ✮⋆˙
temperance rx, three of pentacles rx, queen of cups rx, the tower, ace of swords rx
pile two, I love how unconventional you are. you’re a unique soul I just KNOWW it!!! and I love the energy. getting your nails done could be significant for you, and getting fun prints / 3D parts on the nail is significant too. you’re at a crossroads this October. this might have something to do with your religion / spirituality and your practice. I feel like you’re getting stuck in things you learnt in childhood and things you’re discovering for yourself. you might feel scared to take steps on your own to find something completely you. you’re scared to lose something? you have only to gain from finding yourself, so don’t be afraid! (easier said than done, I know). I was about to ask for more clarification and two cards were already turned over in my deck, so I feel like you’re the person to do things for others without them even being aware at first. you have a strong energy, lol! you get in peoples heads. Gilmore girls could be significant as well, especially Jess and Lorelai, the offspring just came on and I immediately thought of that scene where Lorelai says “Metallica is way more substantial than the offspring!” and Jess with his Metallica shirt lol! Metallica could be significant as well, you’re probably alternative. if not you could be finding yourself more this month in discovering your own style, and exploring alternative fashion! :-)
I’m about to pull the cards for your relationships this month, and I hear “who can it be now?” you might not want it right now but shit is going down this October, you coming out as the winner. I see people constantly getting on your nerves, you being contacted a lot and bothered. this situation might already be going on, because I feel like it’s going to be fixed or behind you before the month ends. like the ending to the tower moment, rather than the moment happening this month. it might be an internal tower moment, where your relationships help you prevail. you and your friends and family are a team and you fight together, don’t forget that.
significant: alternative fashion, cool hair, punk, liberty spikes, Gyaru fashion, fun nail designs, METALLICA!!!, Gilmore girls, texts, unknown number documentary, religion, spirituality, trying out new ways to practice
PILE THREE ⋆˚꩜。

pile three, girl how are you still standingggg??? you are TIRED. basically sleepwalking right now, aren’t you? you’ve got a headache, I can see you being sick, did the flu season get you? 😭 if so, get well soon <3. I’ve never used this many emojis in a reading before, so you’re probably usually a really expressive person, but it’s just all a bit too much right now. maybe you still act this way but it’s not coming from a sincere place anymore. not necessarily insincere either, but coming from a place of lack. please pour into your own cup, and care for yourself this October. I see you taking back control this October, this might be over yourself, your emotions, but I can see a managerial position at your place of work also. maybe you used to be a manager, but because you’ve been so tired you haven’t been able to do as much as you used to / you would like? this strength is coming back to you this October. keep dreaming, the past is gone. Aerosmith could be significant? I know you might feel hopeless right now, but take this as opportunity to grow and learn how to take care of yourself better. you will emerge the Queen of wands, wiser and more compassionate for yourself. you might have to end something you’re on the fence over, or don’t have a solid opinion on. this could be a relationship you’re doubting, with a friend or romantic partner. this is your reminder to choose yourself, whatever is meant for you will find you. have faith.
significant: Aerosmith, tiredness, not being able to sleep at night, unsure in a relationship (friendship or romantic), using emojis, texting a lot (if pile two was calling you as well go read that one too it could definitely be for you), sickness, the flu / a cold, staying in bed, getting back to work / school
notes — hey guysysys! first of all I wanna thank you so much for all the sweet words, likes, and reblogs on the first part!! it genuinely means so much to me to hear that so many people enjoyed it 😝💓!! (highkey so giddy rn) also quick note; I know I messed up the timeline of the dinner but I wanted a little more breathing room to flesh everything out before we delve into the real action, so I moved it to the day after. I already tagged it as so on the masterlist, but this won’t be canon compliant (otherwise there wouldn’t be a happy ending lol). that includes ages and timelines. however there will be things that happen in canon (book and/or show bc I’m mixing and matching) so don’t think too hard on the time in between canon scenes - I’m gonna try my best to make sure they flow smoothly in a way that still makes sense. ty for bearing with me lmao. xx <3
series masterlist — previous chapter
Alicent loved all her children. When they were younger she used to spend more time with them all. She used to run around after Aegon — not by choice, he was just quite a fussy and unruly child. She used to tell stories to Helaena, stroke her hair gently and sing her hymns. She used to be the one person, besides his twin sister, whom Aemond sought comfort in. She used to be able to comfort him. Daeron she misses most, she can hardly remember his stubby hands and white gold hair, but she was comforted in the fact that he would grow up a Hightower in Oldtown, like she did in her youth. Alicent loved all her children, but you were the easiest to love. Your hair, the same color as hers — your eyes, the same color as her mother’s. Her perfect angel, her second chance. She would make sure you would end up better than her, happier than her. And she could only thank the gods you were not born alone, but with Aemond to protect your legitimacy, when your egg did not hatch. Sometimes she wondered if it would have been better to send you along with Daeron, to Oldtown. To shield you from court and it’s dangers. But, alas, she could not part you from Aemond, who needed your comfort so, as you were the only other sibling without a dragon. She didn’t want to admit that a small part of her also needed you with her. Perhaps that’s why she never did send you away, even as Aemond claimed Vhagar, and grew more distant.
As you sit now across from her, the only child to break their fast with her after yesterday’s mess at court, she’s grateful she didn’t. Her only child that’s actually content. Not because of whores or wine, but because of simple joys, like books and embroidery. The only one of her children truly at peace when Alicent brings them to the sept to pray with her. You had never complained about not having a dragon, like Aemond did. You had accepted it with more grace than Alicent ever could have hoped. But she knows your heart was made softer than the world deserved, and she rues the day you will be crushed by a court who does not understand you. A family who does not understand you. She remembers what she felt like being thrust into the claws of all the court, truly, as their queen. And however true it may be that she sits, alive, at this table right now, it does not mean she did not die that day. She is not the same person who ran around old town as a tot, not the same girl who travelled with her father to the Capital, to King’s Landing, to the Red Keep, not the same girl who laid with Rhaenyra below the weirwood and spoke of her dreams. Dreams that would never come true. But she would not let you die. You are much too kind for court. And however much it pains her to admit it, much too weak for it as well. Too trusting. It is virtuous, but it is not advantageous in the climate you were born into.
She observes you as you pick at your food. Your fingers are torn, ‘from embroidery?’ she wonders. But as she looks down at her matching hands a small frown settles between her brows. It seems to settle there so much, it is almost perpetual. She lets her gaze drift over your face, your expression is neutral — not completely absent, like Helaena’s so often is — but your eyes sit deeper in their sockets than usual, sunken, accentuated by the darks under them. You must still be shaken from yesterday. She already had a bad feeling about having her children in that room while Daemon was there. A room that held Daemon Targaryen was never a safe room. Aemond and Aegon, sure, they would have been fine, but she should have never permitted for you and Helaena to go with them. Should have shielded your fragile minds from the gruesome sight.
Alicent pours you a cup of tea, pushes the honey your way so you can sweeten it, pushes a lock of hair behind your ear, tries to connect with you. She searches your eyes as her hand strokes a gentle path from your ear down your jaw, giving you a small, comforting smile. “Do not think of yesterday anymore, my sweet.” She says in a calm cadence, letting her thumb run over your sun-kissed cheek, just below your sunken-in eyes. You need more sleep, more rest, more reprieve from court and it’s harsh dealings. You nod slightly, smiling sweetly at her, still her little girl, still her perfect princess. “I will try, mother.” You reply, voice still a tad hoarse from sleep and she internally coos at your demeanor. She gives a firm nod and a proud smile as she retracts her hand from your face, resuming the cracking of an egg. She is grateful, she thinks, that her youngest daughter is so simple, when her oldest is so complicated, so perplexing. She thanks the Mother silently. Perhaps the worst of yesterday had already begun to fade.
A servant girl enters her quarters, some jams and fruits on a platter she places on the increasingly filling table, others take their leave after setting down more breads, and juices of all kinds. The servant girl steps into Alicent’s line of sight, not daring to make eye contact with her as she bows deeply before her Queen. “Shall I bring breakfast for Prince Aegon, Your Grace?” the girl says in a shaky voice. Is she new, Alicent wonders absentmindedly, already shifting her focus back over to you. “If he wishes to eat, he knows where to find it.” She replies, dismissing the serf with an inattentive wave of her bejeweled hand, moving with her other to put some more raspberries on your plate. “Have another bite. Hm?” she encourages with a smile. You return it, “Yes, Mother.” Pricking some on your fork and doing as your mother tells you. As you always have done.
Beyond the windows, the Red Keep was already waking. Servants hurried through its halls, maesters carried messages between towers, and somewhere in the yard below, steel rang against steel. The court would gather again before day's end. Alicent only prayed you would be spared the worst of it. “Y/N, dear,” She began, you looked up from the fruit and little cakes laid before you, still picking at your breakfast more than eating it. Alicent cleared her throat. “Your father has decided that before your half-sister leaves again, we must all dine together, as a family.” She paused for a moment, taking another bite herself as she let her words settle. “The dinner will be tonight.”
“Of course, Mother.”
For as long as he could remember, you were always reading. Always sitting somewhere out of the way with another ridiculous romance or fairytale tucked beneath your arm. Everyone said you were quiet because you were sweet.
They were wrong.
Sweet people laughed more.
Aegon had known you all your life, his little sister. The soft, sweet, content Princess that wandered around the keep, and Maegor’s Holfast, and the gardens, with her face turned to her shoes. Everyone thought you were so docile, so grounded. You were not. You had simply learned which smiles earned praise, and which silences kept questions away. It was exhausting watching everyone mistake that for happiness. Exhausting to see his mother praise you when you’d smile and tell her you had a good time at the sept, when he saw your eyes drift to the windows every ten minutes. All you’d have to do is smile and you’d please her. His mother never looked at him the way she looked at you. He could win a tourney and she’d ask if he’d been drinking. But he saw you for what you were. If anyone in this family understood you, it was him. You were just like him. He’d lost count of the amount of times he’d found you asleep over an open book. No lady’s maid, no septa, no companion, no dragon, just you. Alone. Mother saw a saint. Aemond saw a sister. The servants saw a Princess. But he knew better. Aegon saw you. If anyone in this family knew what it meant to pretend you were happier than you were, it was him.
He’d escape in his wine, you’d escape in your books. Both would let the responsibilities, the worries, the pains go away, he imagined, though books never seemed to do the trick for him. Maybe if they did, his mother wouldn’t have hit him so much as an adolescent. However, you also are sweeter than him, he thinks to himself, holding his goblet of Dornish Red close to his chest like his mother would a rosary. He stalks the halls until he is in front of her chamber door. He’d scoffed that morning in his bed, as the serf he had asked where his food was told him his mother wished him to fetch it himself from her chambers. He knows his mother didn’t phrase it that way. He chooses to ignore it. Slinging the door open with little care for being proper, he took another large swig of his wine, taking ungraceful steps into the room. His mother looks the pinnacle of royalty and devotion as the sun paints the room in an almost too-warm, too-bright hue, a halo of light surrounding her gracefully and neatly styled locks of auburn. An auburn almost identical of the hair of his little sister, sitting near his mother at the table and picking at her meal. He can’t recall the last time he’s seen you truly eat a meal, instead of merely poking it. “Mother,” He says, a brazen smile gracing his features as his mother grimaces up at him, a bite of food in her mouth. He turns to you, “Sister,” he begins, letting his eyes dramatically dart back and forth between the berries on your plate and your face, raising his brows as he points at the porcelain. “You know the berries needn’t be killed. You can stop poking them.” You huff a small laugh and roll your eyes playfully away at his jest, he smirks, showing his teeth. It was good to see you smile. “Good morrow to you too, Aegon. Tell me-” you began, pointing your fork playfully to his cup as he sits down across the table from you. “Is that Arbour Gold, or Dornish Red?” You were now the one to smirk at him, as he chuckled good-heartedly back at you. “Dornish Red.” He replies, grabbing breads and fruits from the plates around him as you hummed in response.
It’s quiet for a moment as his mother eats, you poke, and he grabs around himself like a madman, piling food onto his plate, before his mother speaks. “There is a dinner tonight with the whole family, including Princess Rhaenyra.” The words settle over him like lead. His shoulders sag. His head threatens to follow, lower and lower, until his face ends up buried in the jam-filled pastry on the center of his plate. He is already dreading it. “You will be in attendance.” Her voice is sharp, commanding. Aegon snorts, feigning relaxation, ease. “Will I? Wonderful. Shall I pretend to enjoy myself?” His mother glares his way, exhaustion seeping through the corners of her expression. “You shall be sober.” He can feel the bile rise in his throat, the sweet scent wafting off the pastries sitting all around the table transform from something pleasant into something rancid in the span of a single conversation. He does not reply, instead opting to refill his goblet with another dose of his favorite wine and sink into his chair, crumpled, uncaring for posture.
He does not say much for the rest of the meal, opting instead to stare out of the window, conveniently, right across from his mother. He doesn’t feel the need to torture himself with the look of disappointed disdain surely on her face this particular morning, he was already being tortured with a ‘family’ dinner later today. Occasionally his gaze drifts across the table to her. She is almost constantly looking at you, urging another piece of fruit onto your plate, pouring more tea, smoothing an errant strand of auburn hair behind your ear. She barely looks his way. Perhaps she had. Perhaps he simply hadn't noticed.
As he looked at the two of you, bathed in warm morning light like figures from a holy painting, he wondered where the branch had split, where his mother started treating him in a way that so differed to how she treated you. You earned smiles. He earned commands. He couldn't remember the last thing she'd said to him that wasn't an instruction. The thought brought him no comfort. Instead, he reached for another goblet of wine, abandoning the monstrous pile of food on his plate altogether, in favor of the bitter taste of escapism at the bottom of his drink.
Then, you left. “It is getting rather late,” you’d sung, saccharine smile on your lips, a manufactured twinkle in your — uncharacteristically sunken — eyes. “I should get started on my day.” You got up, primly swept your palms over the skirt of your gown before stepping closer to your mother and laying one of them over her shoulder in a comforting gesture. Her brown eyes found yours, and just like that, she smiled. A real smile. The sort she never seemed to have for him. He truly couldn’t even blame her. If he had to choose who his favorite sibling was, he would pick you in a heartbeat. He loved Helaena, but there were moments he could not look her in the eyes, could not look at her. All he'd see were the awful things his marriage — and the Faith — made him do to her. Forced him to do to her. Even if the act itself was pleasurable for him, the shame was not. Aemond thought him a fool, he knew. Aemond excelled at everything a firstborn son was meant to excel at. Aegon, he reckoned, had become rather proficient at the pursuits usually reserved for second sons. Aemond couldn’t appreciate it. Judged him for it. You, however, never judged him. Well... you did. But you always forgave him. Always showed him grace. Always tried to understand him. And he loved you for it. He knows you disapprove of his actions—you frown when he's too drunk, tell him to drink water, nag him to ‘go sleep it off, Egg’, sigh when he stumbles in at supper, covered in wine — but you never write him off as a lost cause.
“Thank you for the food, Mother. I enjoyed the berries very much.” His mother raised her hand to lay atop yours. Gods, you really were good at this. At saying the right thing. At making his mother feel needed. Of course you thanked her. You thanked cooks, guards, stable boys. Even him, whenever he managed to do something decent for once. “Of course, my angel. Enjoy your day.” His mother responded, squeezing your hand once, twice, then letting it go and turning her face back down to the table, fingers reaching for the teacup left steaming near her plate. You let your hand fall off his mother’s shoulder, and lifted your gaze to him. “Brother.” You nodded to him, smile tinged in a bit of worry as you cautiously, stealthily, eyed his goblet of wine. He must’ve refilled it near ten times already now. He answered with a tight grin, lifting his goblet in mock salute. "Sister.”
With that you leave the room, your steps near-silent as you glide across the floor, almost like a mirage. As the door closed behind you, it seemed you took the sun with you. The room settled back into shadow, and somehow even the wine tasted duller.
When you thought of the excuse to get out under your brother’s overly observant gaze and your mother’s overly kind hands you didn’t think of what starting your day would actually mean. Now you stand alone in an empty corridor with nowhere in particular to go.
As your feet carry you silently through the Holdfast’s halls you let yourself look at the people you pass by. Guards bowing their heads at you, Lords and Ladies greeting you with a soft “Princess.” You hope they don’t look too closely at you, at the obvious signs of exhaustion on your face, and instead at your dress. You dressed in a beautiful gown today, it was new. You hope no more blood will get on your dresses, it completely ruins them. Your sleeves are sheer, long, with a golden band spanning across your upper arm on both sides, matching with the golden belt you wear across your waist, it catches the light as you walk. The soft light green velvet of the gown itself seems to dance around you as you move. Your collarbones are on display with the low cut of the bust, golden thread woven into delicate patterns all around the collar. A dragon wrought in gold circles your throat, elegant enough to pass for ornament. Some mornings it felt more like a collar. Your hair is braided into an intricate style by hands far more skilled than your own. You suppose it looks lovely. You wouldn't know. One mirror only ever showed half of a person.
You walk into a hallway with less people, then pivot into one with brighter light, then dart down the stairs because you think you spot a rat in the alcove you wanted to take refuge in. The halls all blur together, every passageway the same. You find a stack of books on a windowsill in a narrow hall you think is close to the tower of the Hand. You can’t tell anymore. You let your fingers run along the spines, reading the titles of the ones big enough to have them displayed on the side, pulling out the smaller ones to rake your eyes over the front in half-feigned interest. You decide to take a chance on ‘Tales of Old Valyria’ taking the book off its perch, letting it rest in both your hands, pressed to your backside as you leisurely continue your stroll through the castle. You do not particularly care what the book is about. You simply want something else to think about. Anything other than the emotions yesterday had stirred awake inside you.
You shiver once more at the reminder, but it’s not Vaemond’s face that lingers longest, it’s your nephew’s. Jacaerys had stood so terribly still while grown men argued over whether he was allowed to call the father that raised him, the father that embraced him as his own, the father that loved him, his father. You wonder if he has grown used to it by now. You hope he has not. No one should. You remember his face much more clearly than his brother’s, for some reason.
He had changed. The last time you had truly seen him, the both of you had still been children. You remember how cruelly he used to tease your twin brother for not having a dragon, but never you. You wonder, now, if it had anything to do with Aegon never teasing you, only Aemond. You wonder now whether it had ever been cruelty at all. Perhaps it had simply been self-preservation. Yesterday, when he walked into the throne room behind his mother, something inside you had caught. Not because he was handsome — though he was — but because he had looked so painfully familiar. It wasn't simply that he'd grown older. It was the way grief and duty had settled into him, as though the years between had carved them both into his bones. Like someone who had spent years learning how to carry burdens that were never meant for them.
More than once, you had caught your gaze drifting back to him before you even realized you were looking. Not enough for anyone else to notice, but enough for you to notice. You told yourself then, don’t look at him, and tried to keep your eyes on Vaemond. It unsettled you more than it should have. You could not remember the last time you'd looked at anyone twice.
You wonder whether he hated you. You would not blame him if he did. Perhaps, when he looked at you, he only saw the green of your dress. Perhaps he only saw the way you resembled your mother, like so many others seemed to.
Without quite realizing where your feet are taking you, you turn down another corridor, then another, until stone gives way to sunlight. The gardens had always offered you reprieve from the hustle and bustle of court. You can’t force flowers to bloom faster, you can’t rush them into an early grave brought on by the exhaustion of expectation. They take their time, they bloom when they want to, when they’re ready. Something you don’t find mirrored in the people you grew up around. The ones you spend most of your time with. Everything always seems like it needs to be done faster, neater, more efficient. Like everything in life is a race to be won.
You open the book as you let yourself fall back into a small field of clovers near a secluded part of the garden, shielded by hedges and bushes and trees surrounding you as if you were in a real forest, and not a meticulously planned piece of architecture on the grounds of a great castle. The smell of grass surrounds you and you inhale deeply, trying to burn the scent into your brain, trying to overwrite the taste of iron that yesterday had left behind, a souvenir you’d yet to rid yourself of.
You close your eyes, letting the cold breeze wash away your worries for a small moment, before you have to return to the world again.
If it were up to Jacaerys, he’d be back on Dragonstone already. King’s Landing positively reeks, and no matter how much he walks around the Red Keep, he can’t seem to escape the smell of feces and despair wafting faintly over from the streets just outside the castle’s perimeter walls. But, alas, it’s not up to him. He would blame his mother, his step-father too, if it were up to them. But it is not up to them either. His grandsire requested they stay one more night, and one more day — which really translated to two more nights, since Joffrey didn’t dare fly in the dark — so they could have a family dinner together, as a whole. And a King’s request is, almost always, not a request at all.
He’d slept terribly. Not just because of the smell, or because of the location, a Keep crawling with traitors and vipers, if it were because of those factors, the problems wouldn’t have started when he heard of Vaemond’s plans, days before he ever got to King’s Landing. But they had. And sleep deprivation wasn’t making him feel any better about his particular predicament. He wouldn’t even dare call it a predicament, really. It was more so a curse. A dark cloud that hung over his life, everything he is, everything he ever will be, all his achievements, ever since he was born with brown hair, and brown eyes. Anything anyone saw when they looked at him was ‘BASTARD’, in big letters across his forehead. They did not care that he rode a dragon, not truly, or that he was near-fluent in High Valyrian now. All they cared about was that he was not born with the Valyrian features needed to be a proper Valyrian Prince, much less a Valyrian Heir to the throne.
So he walks, irate from the stench, the lack of sleep, and the looks people keep giving him in the corridors. All the Lords and Ladies that greet him saying “My Prince,” while their eyes are silently shouting something much different. All through the Keep. He tries every hallway, every corridor, every balcony, every alcove, but all smell the same. Disgusting and filthy. And opening a window would only make the smells more pungent, he’d found out. That was the whole reason he was walking in the first place. He’d tossed and turned in his bed the whole night, and after he sat down to break his fast, alone, in his room, as he requested, he thought maybe opening a window would help get rid of the stale odor that hung around the chambers. He quickly realized that was the wrong move, and found he had no appetite left. He truly couldn’t remember the Red Keep ever smelling as bad as it had now, even when he lived there as a boy. Had it gotten worse in the years he spent away? Or had he merely grown used to the brisk and fresh air of Dragonstone? He missed the trace of sulfur that hung around the outskirts of the island, the way the rain made it more distinct.
After passing the same tapestry for the third time in half an hour, he gives up and decides to go outside. Surely it would be better somewhere. Perhaps the godswood? The gardens? He imagines the gardens will have more flowers, ergo, more pleasant smells, and so he makes way for one of the garden’s small side entrances. They truly are beautiful. Grand rose bushes frame both sides of the path, joining in a canopy above the crown of Jacaerys’ head and offering small patches of shade along the walkway. He hears birds chirping, a butterfly flies around his hand before disappearing into the foliage above, ducks in a fountain around the corner are quacking and jostling the water.
He follows the winding path through beds of flowers and creeping ivy, finally finding a semblance of peace among fragrances gathered, he is sure, from every corner of Westeros. He startles, however, when he hears a a slow, measured inhale from somewhere beyond the roses. He freezes, his relaxation ebbing away quickly as he realizes he is not alone. Should he go? No, he is a Prince. A Prince whose nose is in dire need of a small reprieve of the dizzying aroma of King’s Landing and the Red Keep respectively. But he would walk away, find his own spot in the garden to take deep, dramatic sighs in. He moves to walk back to the opposite end of the path, but a curiosity overtakes him. He is quite bored. Perhaps, someone interesting would be on the other side of the bush? Perhaps a merchant who could tell him great stories of his travels, maybe exchange stories of captaining a ship. Or a traveling crone who could look into his future, and assure him the gods had marvelous things planned for him, provided he handed over enough silver. It could do no harm to look, he reasons, stepping quietly back toward the rose bushes, cautiously peering around the dense leafage to finally reveal this great mystery he had just sold himself on.
Maybe a maid is stealing a moment’s rest, or it may be one of the castle’s children who got lost chasing a butterfly, or perchance- Jacaerys freezes mid-thought. A girl lies half-hidden amongst the clover, one arm folded beneath her head, the other lazily holding open a book whose pages stir with every passing breeze. Sunlight filters through the leaves of the tree above her, scattering patches of gold across the pale green velvet of her gown. She looks... asleep, almost. No. Not asleep. Resting. His eyes catch on the dragon of worked gold curled around her throat. His aunt. Princess Y/N.
You were reading, or trying to. The book resting open upon your chest, though your eyes were closed, your face turned toward the warmth filtering through the branches. Of all the people he expected to find hidden away in the gardens, Alicent Hightower's youngest daughter had ranked somewhere beneath a wandering bear. He does not speak as you shift onto your stomach, never easing your grip on your book as you turn, settling it into the grass beneath you. Your chin comes to rest in your hands as your eyes skim the page. Long auburn waves spill over your shoulders and dance with the breeze, the sunlight catching them until they burn almost copper, almost flame. Before he quite realizes what he is doing, he finds himself taking another step closer. What are you reading? He tries to make out the words, leaning in just enough to glimpse the page, when a gust of wind stirs the branches overhead. Sunlight shifts. His shadow falls across the parchment and you turn instantly. If he were not so mortified at being caught, he might have admired your reflexes.
Your bright eyes are open wide, every bit as striking and round as your mother's, and lock onto his. Well, if you didn’t hate him before, you certainly will now, Jace thinks to himself, clenching his fist so hard in shame his knuckles nearly burst at the seams. But his face remains a bit more impassive, at least he hopes it does. He waits for recognition to settle over your features. For surprise to harden into the careful sort of revulsion he had grown accustomed to. The sort hidden behind courtly smiles and polished manners. The sort that said bastard without ever speaking the word. And now, perhaps, creep besides. He could hardly blame you. He braces for your startled expression to turn into one of disgust as you take in his features and realize who — what — exactly you’re dealing with. But it doesn’t come. Instead you simply blink. “Oh-” The surprise remains, but it is not tainted with disgust. Your eyes search his face for only a heartbeat before you incline your head with perfect courtesy. “Good morrow, Prince Jacaerys.”
It is so simple, so ordinary, that, for a moment, he almost forgets how to answer. There is no mockery hidden beneath your words. No careful emphasis. No veiled slight waiting to reveal itself. His fist unclenches slightly, a small weight he didn’t even know was there sliding off his shoulders in an instant. He had not realized how tightly he had been holding himself together until something inside him finally gave way. Gathering what dignity his sleep-starved mind can muster, he straightens almost instinctively, slipping back into the role he has rehearsed since boyhood. “And to you, Princess Y/N.” He replies. Only then does he truly look at you. You look nothing like you had in the throne room. Yesterday you’d been standing straight near Alicent, mirroring her rigid posture, never looking away from Vaemond until his body was carried out of the chamber by a group of Gold Cloaks. Today you looked… more at ease, smaller, human.
For a moment, neither of you says anything. Jacaerys lets his eyes drift from your face for a second, catching your book still open in the grass behind your half-turned frame, and bristles, becoming, suddenly, acutely aware of the way he found himself having this conversation with you in the first place, if you could even call it a conversation at all. He clears his throat and inclines his head subtly, letting his eyes rave the ground. “I apologize.” As he looks back up to the soft curves of your face he sees a furrow forming in your brow, eyes holding the same confused peer as they used to when you were kids, when your brother Aegon would make thinly veiled comments on his bastardy, ones you evidently did not pick up on at the time. “For what?” you reply, the inquiry snapping him back to the present. He gestures vaguely toward the book, the grass — your personal space which he invaded so unceremoniously, trying to find the words appropriate to say in such a situation. “For… startling you. I did not mean to.” He returns, watching your face shift from confusion to an almost mischievous expression, eyes observant like a cat’s, as your eyes shift from him to the bushes behind him in rapid succession. “You were watching me.” It is not an accusation. Somehow, that makes it worse.
“I was not watching you.” He lets it out too quickly, almost a knee-jerk reaction, letting his eyes drop from yours in favor of the russet locks draped casually over your exposed collarbone. In the corner of his eye he can see your lips twitch. He realizes, belatedly, that this is a terrible defense. You cock your head, the curls falling from their perch over your shoulder as an amused but demure smirk etches itself onto your lips more visibly, “You were.”
He swallows, throat dry in a way he has not experienced in years, embarrassment exposed in a heat that spreads from the back of his neck to his ears. He knows he must have the color to match it. Finding the courage turn his gaze back to your face, instead of the ambiguous point somewhere between your book and your shoulder, he retorts, “I was merely attempting to decipher what you were reading.” That earns him a proper look. He discovers, the more that he observes it, that he finds your face quite pleasant to look at. He doesn’t let himself linger on the thought, and neither do you. “You could’ve just asked.” The simplicity of it renders him near speechless once again. “I could have.” You raise your eyebrows at him, “But you did not.” Your eyes, alight in the afternoon sunlight, almost seem to have specks of gold near the center of your pupil. “No.” He turns his face to his feet, letting his curls conceal his rapidly reddening blush as he lets a small silence linger between the two of you. He should’ve just turned the other way when he had the chance, when he first saw who lay behind the rose bush. No, he thinks, when he first heard sounds coming from the opposite side. Then, unexpectedly, you smile. It is not the polished smile he has seen you give the court. It is smaller, almost reluctant. Jacaerys finds his lips turn up in return before he can stop himself.
You glance swiftly back at the book before facing him once more, “It is called; Tales of Old Valyria.” He nods, finding the ease with which you interact with him liberating. You are quite different from your siblings. “Is it any good?” Offering a small smile of his own in return, on purpose this time, in appreciation. You consider this with surprising seriousness, the furrow between your brows making its return onto your gentle features. He decides it does not disrupt your beauty, the crinkle of your nose as you grimace at him from your seat in the grass. “I have no idea.” His brows lift. “I have only read three pages.” You add. Something about the admission catches him off guard. A laugh slips from him before he can stop it, quiet and genuine. You look at him, for a moment and he worries he may have upset you, then you laugh too. It is a small sound, barely more than a breath, but Jacaerys thinks he has not heard anything quite so pleasant since arriving in King's Landing.
“Are you particularly interested in Old Valyria?” He inquires. He finds he does not want the conversation to end, and he is confident now it counts as a proper conversation. You hum, your eyes leaving his face and instead roaming along your view of the gardens, “Not necessarily… I wanted something that happened a long time ago.” Your side profile is illuminated by the soft rays of the sun and Jacaerys wonders if the freckles that taint your skin have some kind of magnetic quality, for he longs to get closer to you. He does not question his own whims as you look back at him, inclining his head in a soft nod to the ground beside you in silent question, beaming internally when you nod at him in consent. He sits down in the cushy grass next to you, making sure to keep an appropriate distance between where your gown is splayed out on the soft green and where his legs rest. “In truth I don’t care much what the book is about,” You muse, a faraway look catching in your eye, it is almost gone too soon to notice. Jacaerys does so anyway. “I just needed something to occupy my mind.”
He takes a moment to look past the sparkling jewelry adorning your person, the done-up hair, the magnificent gown, its golden thread glistening in the sun. You look tired. The skin under your eyes dark, the same way his gets when he’s spent too many hours bent over books and scrolls, or with his sword in his hand in the tiltyard, practicing until perfection into the depths of the night, or when his mind gets too loud and grants him no reprieve of the endless taunts and accusations made against his identity during the daytime, even when he’s exhausted beyond belief and just wishes, more than anything, *to sleep.* Were you also trying to quell thoughts of yesterday? You did seem quite shaken by Vaemond’s beheading, stiff as a board, being tugged away by your twin brother in a manner much too harsh for a Princess — in his opinion. You shouldn’t have had to see that.
“I was seeking much the same.” His admission seems to bring you back to the world around you, your head turning his way once again, and he doesn’t know why he revels in the attention so, a flicker of something alight in his chest at your warm gaze. His hands settle in the grass behind him, splayed out much like you are, though laid back a bit more leisurely in an almost overly casual pose. “I’ve been having some troubles getting used to the… unique scent of of the Keep, I’m afraid.” He jests, letting his gaze linger on you. You’ve turned to sit on your side, facing his lounging figure as the fingers of the hand not used to prop yourself up trace figures in the grass near your dress. “Ah, I see how you found your way to the gardens, then. I find they are much kinder than the corridors.” He lets his gaze shift back to the high castle walls protruding garishly from over the various colorful hedges and trees that make up the gardens, it is silent for a moment as he lets it linger. “You do not like it here.” It startles him, your bluntness. He turns his head back towards you, “Do I make it so obvious?” He asks, letting some of his melancholy slip through the princely exterior. You make it almost too easy to let his guard down.
