NATURE ASSEMBLED: Angie Lewin’s exhibition of over 50 new watercolours opens next week at the Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh. I was delighted to contribute the Foreword for the catalogue. It’s a very attractive publication and available from both @stjudes and @scottishgallery . Angie has worked on the series over the past two years, creating beautifully observed and accomplished watercolours of plant forms, feathers and pebbles, but it’s particularly interesting to see those created during lockdown which have a different character: auriculas and dahlias with have intense, darker colours that remind me of Persian miniatures. We talked about containment and unconstrained natural forms, of pattern-making and design and the artists she admires - and I think most interestingly for these works, as much the floral still lives of Edward Burra as Eric Ravilious. Angie’s Wood-engraving ‘Bird Cup’ is included in the exhibition ‘Drawn to Nature: Gilbert White and the Artists’ @pallanthousegallery until 15 November. #angielewin #stjudesfabrics #watercolour #naturelovers #ericravilious #natureart (at Brighton and Hove) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFeMrtMlSoi/?igshid=xkol7s38teis
