Some good charity book finds in St Albans yesterday: The Complete Adventures of Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans and Design - Edward Bawden/ Eric Ravilious. Took a packed lunch this time and steered clear of £5.50 sausage rolls. 👍 . . . #stalbans #ludwigbemelmans #edwardbawden #ericravilious https://www.instagram.com/p/B16EmvSnGMe/?igshid=1av19rjlrfbql
ESCAPE TO THE COUNTRY: it never fails to amaze me that it’s possible to walk up to an extraordinary national park from Brighton. Looking East from the South Downs Way you can see the white cliffs of the Seven Sisters, inland are the undulatations of Firle Beacon and Mount Caburn and alongside is Lewes with its distinctive castle keep. Of course, it’s impossible not to think of chalk paths and think of the watercolours of Eric Ravilious, but actually this landscape has been an inspiration to so many artists. We saw our first lark of spring, or to be precise, we heard it before we saw it, right above us and I thought of Samuel Palmer and heard ‘The Lark Ascending’ in my head. It’s exhilarating to get out into nature and the sunshine after spending weeks working inside at home and to see cows, sheep and even the occasional horse - and for much of time there was no sound of cars or traffic. @southdownsnp @visit_southdowns @southdowns #southdowns #sussex #ericravilious #southdownsway #nature (at Castle Hill Nature Reserve) https://www.instagram.com/p/CLkGWHZFlG5/?igshid=1i6v59b61phmf
White Horses The ‘lost’ Puffin Picture Book. In the late autumn of 1939 Eric Ravilious set off on a whirlwind painting tour of the chalk figures on the Downs. It was for a book, that sadly never made it beyond dummy stage. These original paintings, with black & white illustrations by Alice Pattullo, based on Ravilious’s dummy, will finally see the light of day in their intended format, a reimagined Puffin Picture Book. White Horses can be pre-ordered now via the link in my profile. #ericravilious #whitehorses #downlandman @alicepattullo #designfortoday #chalkpaths #puffinpicturebook https://www.instagram.com/p/Bt-cFKygFxX/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1fg48yygfn5n5
