Iceland fishing report Vol 3
Been travelling a bit lately and visited a few rivers. The same news are coming from all over the country, the salmon are in early and in numbers.
On the Langa River there have been landed some 150 salmon so far in the week it’s been open.
On the Laxa in Leirarsveit River the river is full of salmon but they are not taking very well. A few landed each day though.
On Huseyjarkvisl the opening group finished their 3 days fishing at noon today. They ended up with landing 31 salmon and that is a record opening for the river.
We fished it tonight and landed one salmon and this magnificent beast of a sea trout.
More later.
Iceland Fishing report Vol 2.
These days it’s all about the salmon. They are running early and in numbers. Most rivers that have opened are having the best start ever.
Kjarra River
Kjarra is the upper part of the Thvera/Kjarra River system. It opened on June 12. in the morning and the first group fished for 2,5 days until noon on the 14th. A group of 7 rods opened and what an opening it was. 93 salmon were landed and it was clear the fish had spread all over the river. We had a group fishing for 4 days from June 14. - 18. and they landed 31 salmon. Water was dropping quickly and the takes slowed down with the dropping water. Some strong grilse runs were coming in every day so the outlook is good.
Thvera River
We took a group fishing there for June 16. - 20. for the third year in a row. In 2014 (very bad year for salmon fishing in Iceland) we landed 17 salmon for 8 rods fishing 4 days. In 2015 (very good year for salmon fishing in Iceland) we landed 43 salmon. This year the group landed a whopping 57 salmon for the 4 days fishing. If that is any indication on how the salmon fishing in Iceland will be this year we really look forward to the rest of the season.
Trout and char fishing
The char fishing in particular has gone off with a bang and the sea run char is pouring into the rivers. The trout benefit from the mild spring and early hatches of fly and are in great shape.
Iceland fishing report Vol 1.
The season started with sea trout fishing in April. It was good for the most part, the weather was mild and conditions were good.
In May the brown trout fishing took over and Lake Thingvellir played a big part in the fishing scene in May. Some monster trout were caught on the lake in May and April.
Late May the brown trout fishing up north opened with a bang. The fish were in great shape and the mild spring continued with strong early hatches of caddis and black fly. As a result the fish were plump and strong.
Then on June 4. the salmon season started and it went off with a bang. A bang so loud it’s not been that loud before. The Nordura opened on June 4. and it was crazy. The next day the Blanda River opened with a new record. Yesterday the Thvera and Kjarra Rivers opened also with a new record.
We will be going to Kjarra River tomorrow and we will report from the fishing there.
