Armani says no to Angora Wool as part of its new free-fur policy
Armani says no to Angora Wool as part of its new free-fur policy
Fashion giant Armani has decided to do away with angora wool as part of its new free-fur policy. Angora wool is made of rabbit hair and has a high demand among buyers for its warmth. However, animal rights groups, including PETA, have been protesting long to stop its usage in various winter clothing. The company told AFP that they anyway have a small percentage of such products that use angora…

The Creature Awaits #37:
Each week I plan to feature an amazing creature, admiring God's fantastic artistry. Hopefully it’ll brighten someone’s day to see something new and interesting if they haven’t seen it before. : )
(Photo from https://enchantedangorarabbits.weebly.com )
With it still being winter, I thought this week we'd continue with the theme of warm, fuzzy, wool-producing creatures. : )
Angora Rabbits
Scientific Name: Oryctolagus cuniculus (Name for all European rabbits, not just Angoras)
Original Turkish: Ankara tavşanı
Region: First bred in Ankara, the capital of Turkey, which was once known as Angora
Size: The 11 breeds of Angora rabbits range in weight from ~4-12lbs (1.8-5.4kg)
Interesting Note: Regularly shearing Angora rabbits every 3-4 months is actually healthy for them as it helps prevent a condition called "Wool Block" where the rabbit's fur clogs its digestive tract. Unlike cats and other animals, rabbits can't physically vomit, so when they get a hairball after grooming, it has to pass downward through the digestive system. If too much gathers... yeah, it's not good. : /
So, enjoy that beautifully spun Angora wool as it's helping keep the sweet little bunnies healthy! (Granted, this might not have become so much worse an issue for Angora rabbits specifically if they weren't selectively bred to have such crazily long fluffy fur in the first place...but, well....hopefully at this point everyone is making sure to keep them regularly shorn and healthy. : ) )

And you can visit a site of one of the artists out there making beautiful art from Angora wool here: https://www.indigorabbittree.com/
Anyways, if you're wondering... "Angora wool comes from Angora rabbits? What about Angora goats?" Angora goats produce a wool referred to as Mohair, and they are also absolutely adorable...Maybe they should be next week's feature..........
