I need everyone who is sincere about getting people to vote, and especially, everyone who is sincere about getting people who don't like the Democratic candidates to vote for them anyway, to realize something:

Condescending to people doesn't work. Telling people that they're idiots if they let "moral purity" get in the way of voting for The Lesser Evil is going to get negative votes. It's going to drive away mostly disconnected people who were still going to try and make the effort. Please stop making these posts, please stop reblogging these posts, you are doing active harm to the effort. If you want to vent about people who aren't voting, do it in private.

I can understand why people reblog those “this guy murdered a child molester, what a hero!” posts, but they’re pretty darn Bad Actually. We shouldn’t be celebrating white men with guns deciding to kill someone on the spur of the moment. I really feel like I shouldn’t have to tell y’all this.

Yes, voting is important, and we all should do it.

Can we please stop punching down at the people who are frustrated about the candidates we have? Can we please stop talking about how they want ~ideological purity~? Can we stop trying to emotionally blackmail the people who are just fucking tired after politician after politician has promised to make life better, and then thrown them under the bus in order to appeal to upper-middle-class white centrists?

We’re all supposed to fucking be in this together. If you’re out there yelling at someone poor, someone queer, someone of color, that Trump is their fault because they didn’t vote in 2016, and they better fucking straighten up or they’ll get it again this time - stop it. Support your siblings in resistance. Don’t waste your energy fighting the people who are already hurting. Put it against our actual goddamn oppressors.

Yes, but that’s the thing: “forgive your abusers” is an example of a redemption arc being done badly. Like, when I say “I want more X media”, I mean “I want more of that media done thoughtfully and well”. Normally I’d try to be more nuanced and thoughtful, but in my current not-great brain state, I’m just gonna say: You can take it as read that when I say I want something, I don’t want the shitty version of that thing.
