“I’m always with you. The Diamond Dogs - everything we’re doing, we do it together.” There was a but somewhere in there, a bitter exception that coiled tight in his chest. It made Kaz uneasy, and lord knew how emotional he was, so quick to wear his heart on his sleeve. Teeth gritting and knuckle clenched, Miller’s body was all tense muscle and lines. When he looked at Boss, it was with anger, but not at him - never him. The respect was too great.

Yet, that didn’t stop how often Boss sided against him. “But that traitor and that woman...” Kaz shook his head, nerves dwindling. “What are you doing? They can destroy everything we’ve worked for, tear it all down right from under our noses!” His XO looked at him, searching, confused, maybe even pleading. “I trust you, you know that, more than anyone, but I can’t agree with any of this.”

What the fuck are they!?

“Remember when you were support for the Mujhadeen in Afghanistan, Boss? It’s like that, but they’re requesting support for the actual battle. It’s a coalition between the army of Equatorial Guinea and a PF active in the region against some rebels that took over an oil refinery: they said they’d do most of the actual fighting to capture the plant, they just want some elite backup to lessen their casualties. We were gonna turn it down, but... well, the rebels have Walker Gears on them.

“We can’t rule out the idea that Cipher is involved here, and that’s worth investigating. Help the army and PF by destroying or extracting the enemy’s Walker Gears so they can focus on retaking the plant and help deal with any other rebels standing in your way: and make sure you don’t hurt any of their forces. If you kill even one of their own, that’s the end of the mission.”

That was what Kaz said, anyway. All in all, it had been a rather uneventful battle other than the half a dozen Walker Gears.

Then, a mist formed.

Then they came.

Hearing footsteps around the corner, she quickly stepped out, grenade launcher in hand before seeing it was a man, not one of those things.

“You the Diamond Dogs’ backup!? Shit, get out of open sight: it’s a fucking slaughter!”

In theory, getting oneself captured was not the best plan. But it had gotten her face to face, after she dropped a few of the right terms, with the “Big Boss”. She took a breath when the door creaked open, raising a brow.

“Big Boss, right?” The words had been “Boss”, The Boss, and strongly implying The Boss had let him win. Well, sometimes more then implying. But it took what it took.

“I’m looking for someone the Boss knew. Thought you might know him. So. Can I ask you if you know anything about Jack?”
