These books don't usually do subtlety so it's sort of neat to see Ax's narration being colder than usual for the first 8 chapters and then revealing where his outlook is coming from (secret advice from andalites) in the 9th.
mad respect for this series not glossing over that it wasn't just the yeerk pool but also the downtown area above it destroyed in the explosion.
Several human-Controllers did not run immediately for the exits or the tunnels. Instead, they joined our efforts to free the imprisoned.
It's great that Ax can only speculate on the motives of these human-controllers. He can never know if they were free hosts or under yeerk control. He can never know whether they were part of the resistance before that moment or not. He doesn't get to have those answers. Neither does the reader.
whoo boy. a lot of thoughts I know I will not articulate well about the yeerks dragging pajama-clad civilians out that basically amount to "this hits different in 2026" and "the fact that it hits different in 2026 has way more factors going into it than my sheltered life gives me the ability to examine in full but boy howdy do I kind of have to examine what I can of them anyway" and also "no I am probably not posting the aforementioned examination because poor articulation is a capitol crime on the internet."
I watched her approach her mother. She did not swagger as she usually did. Although I do not approve of what humans call eavesdropping, I could not help but overhear some of their conversation. "Mom," Rachel said softly. "I . . . I'm sorry. I . . ." "Rachel, it's okay . . ." The rest I could not hear. Suddenly, Rachel's shoulder began to shake.
Ax, no! I wanted to see that conversation! Ax, you don't understand!
And I looked up to see a squadron of three Blue Band Hork-Bajir clumping toward us. They must have been hiding on the train all along. No other explanation. How could we have missed them?
They probably did what you do - morphed small. Nothing's stopping the yeerks from giving the morphing power to hork-bajir hosts as well as human ones. The brain's all yeerk controlled so the concerns about a hork-bajir mind dealing with animal instincts is not a factor for them.
a thought-speech announcement would probably have been more efficient than a human voice but I guess the four-minute warning was just as effective either way...
