just a quick explanation why he uses atashi - he is a foreigner and when he speaks he is made to sound very feminine; a lot of novels/games feature men using atashi to emphasize their femininity/homosexuality/whatever, but you’d rarely see it in Japan
Yeah I know why he uses atashi (see my reply to a-rainy-night-at-brewsters), though I don't think his foreign-ness has anything to do with it in this case, since he's probably not trying to imitate the way his Japanese girlfriend speaks.
