'it's crazy how grief serves no evolutionary purpose but is present in multiple intelligent species. it's almost as if there's more to life than survival. there's no benefit to an orca carrying her dead calf around on her back for weeks while she slows the rest of her pod down and refuses to eat. if nature were as brutal as people think it is, her pod would have abandoned her the moment they got hungry, but they didn't.'

An older female elephant in an Indian park had died of an infection. A younger female was walking in circles around the carcass. Fresh dung piles hinted that other elephants had recently visited. researchers found reactions that included touching and standing guard as well as nudging, kicking and shaking. In a few cases, females had even used their trunks to carry calves, or baby elephants, that had died.

Jeff Permar, a gardener in Delaware, noticed someone stealing his veggies in 2019. So, he set up a camera, and caught a groundhog munching on his vegetables. Finding it amusing, Jeff decided to befriend the groundhog and named him “Chunk.”

While Jeff tended to his own garden, he created another one accessible to Chunk. The groundhog soon attracted a partner named Nibbles, for whom Jeff even built a picnic table. As Chunk and Nibbles’ family grew to five, including their children Nugget, Chip, and Chibbles, Jeff eagerly awaited their emergence from hibernation in February.

With Chunk’s family expanding, Jeff learned to distinguish each member by unique traits and shared his harvest with them. He now sees Chunk as the leader, estimating his age at six, and recognizing Chunk Jr.’s emerging leadership. Jeff also interacted with Snacks, a member of the groundhog family who had dental issues, showing his care for all members. Over time, Jeff’s garden became a shared feast, bringing together man and groundhog.
