Simple animation table

If I want to make a short animation, with 24 frames per second and lasting six and a half seconds… how many frames will I need? And if I want to increase the duration by another second, what will be the total number of frames?

For simple questions and to avoid making calculations, I use this table, which I am making available above.

The purpose of the table is mainly to assist in short animations; for this reason it goes just over 14 seconds. I don't know if it will be as useful for long animations.

Another point: the values in seconds are rounded (for example, nine frames would be 0,375) and I preferred to leave it that way for the sake of simplicity.

I ended up inserting the values at intervals of three frames, just because it made it easier for me to put together the table. Nothing stops you, of course, from using even frames: the table is there just as a guide.

Templates for Storyboarding

I made a template in Illustrator for making storyboards (some other formats, too: photoshop for raster editors, and PDF for printing), mainly because I wanted to start making storyboards in earnest and didn't want to recreate a gazillion artboards and format text areas all over again for each file I make. You're welcome to use them for your own digital storyboards, or search for others.

Animation Notes (this link goes over a lot of fundamentals, such as the history of the artform, a summary of Disney’s 12 Principles, and how-tos on key frames, in betweens, lip sync, walk cycles, etc. There are also exercises for self-study)

51 Great Animation Exercises to Master (Probably should be your first step after doing your reading. Open whatever program you’re using, figure out how to do key frames, and get started on #1 and #2 and at least think about the ones after that… if you’re not sure what program to use, download Pencil2D, which runs on Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. Go ahead and check out a tablet from Student Life and get drawing!)
