Yakity six: A little problem of self worth
You know, I thought I would make these type of opinions pieces when Honest apple came to be but quite frankly, This episode deserve it more as I never thought this one would get me mad at the fact that it has a good idea of a plot but then just ruins it. Also spoilers so read more at your own risk.
So yakity six was a episode that aired a little early than usual. Its was a pinkie pie episodes focusing on how you should keep doing what you love regardless of how others think of it. Yes for those of you who are wondering, that is probably one of the biggest problems that the episode have. First let me just say that I get it. Pinkie pie being the most beloved and most peppy character out of the main six, you expect her to be like this with her morals. In fact one of the best episode of season 8 involves this with her sister dating mud briar. Pinkie pie to me, seem to be the way where the writers wants to give a lot of positive influence with their morals and story telling. Sadly I feel that this episode miss the mark as while it did hint at how it would end, I honestly thought they avoid the force happy ending.
Lets first start off with the one major problem I have with this episode. Threw out the entire run time, we been shown that Pinkie pie is pretty terrible with the yovidaphone. Now if there is one thing I do like about this episode, is that it shows us more of the yak’s culture with music. I did like this tid bid of information and seeing a small concert at the end of the episode.
Sadly I feel that is the only thing I actually enjoy about this episode. The main problem I started to notice is that the main six are treated as the bad guys here. Threw out the entire run, Pinkie was annoying them all with the yovidaphone and they have every right to tell her she is not that good. Which by the way, I’m so glad they didn’t hold back on that and I even like the little joke reference from horse play. But yet the episode treats this like a bad thing. I know what they are trying to do but when you show pinkie pie getting more horrible with the yovidaphone and not showing any ounce of improvement to prove them wrong, we got a big problem here.
I do want to feel sad for pinkie pie, but the episode made her look a bit childish that no one likes her concerts that she gives. It really makes you think that pinkie is not the sad pony we should feel sorry for. Instead its a child who is crying and whining that she didn’t get what she wants. I hate saying that as I’m one of the biggest pinkie fans out but that is how I feel about it. Not to mention, it wasn’t that funny ether. Seriously what is it with pinkie pie episodes lacking the humor in season 8. Not that it isn’t a bad thing when Maud couples is still one of my favorite pinkie pie episodes of this season. Its just that its pinkie pie and we expect a sort of comedy with her. But whatever that is subjected taste.
Now with all that in mind, I would think that maybe the ending will be worth it. Even with these issues, I like to think that maybe it will go towards a lesson that can make this legit. But that didn’t happen. Instead we got a force happy ending that say its ok to keep doing what you love despite being awful at it. This is the part where I just got off my computer chair and just say done. This right here, topped Honest apple’s ending as while that is also a force ending, I can at least see what they are going for. Here on the other hand, Not only did they contradict the lesson, but it made pinkie look less stellar on screen.
Now I get what this episode is trying to do. We the audiences have many goals we want to achieve and we should never let failure put us down. However this episode really didn’t show that. It instead shows that you should keep on going despite sucking and people will like it. Ya no. That really isn’t how it suppose to work and I know this issue you can say it goes for the entire show cycle but every moral, including some of the bad ones, has at least some sense of reality to them and you can see that it applies to both kids and adults. Here, it not only ruins it with the episodes presentation, but sorta lies on the fact that life will give you a easy bone to get you back on top. Its not.
This is just personal experiences but I can tell you that I was shit from the beginning with things I wanted to do. Making reviews, writing stories and so forth, I was pretty bad from the beginning and if it wasn’t for my friends, at least the ones who stick by me, telling me that I need improvement, I wouldn’t be here today. This lesson and the episode’s structure didn’t even show Pinkie doing that or at least trying to make better music. At least with honest apple, AJ and Rarity did what they can to find compromise even if its contrive and force. Really this episode feels like it was gonna present another lesson and it sure feels like it too. What would of been better is that they just give a lesson that sometimes, what you love is not something your good at but your good at other things so always remember that. Ya that is what this episode was leading to from the beginning only for the writer to change it because it needs to be on a happy not. Now I’m not against that as the show always kept this tone and for the most post, it succeeded without being insulting. Its just that this time, their need to keep it happy just end ups screwing them over big time.
You know, I can tell you its hard to find out that your not that good at something and have to give up. I wanted to be many things like making cartoons or design a video game in mind but I know for a fact that I’ll only ever watch or play them but that is ok. There are other areas that you are good at and that is something that you should always remember. That to me is what this episode might be trying to do on account that Pinkie is already a very talented pony threw the series. However I feel that in the last minute, they needed to change it because people don’t want to deal with that reality and that is not very good. Some people would bring up that this issue goes back to the first maud episode about pinkie not being able to deal with the fact that friends are not connecting with maud which I can see even if Honest apple matches this more. But this episode does remind me a bit of party poop on the exact level of moral and understanding of the main character conflict, at least in some ways like how the ending is respecting people of their own love of the culture. Plus the yaks and pinkie did act like spoil children threw out the run time only in different ways.
So ya, that is my rant towards this episode. If your curious, I give this a 10/30 as the concept is still there, just been botch beyond belief. Really this episode will always be the biggest falure threw out the run. I did say before that honest apple is on the same league but not to be mean, it was a applejack episode of her being the focus of speaking the truth along with whatever aspect of her life is bound to be a hit or miss kinda of thing and I expected that from her. Pinkie pie, her episodes are always on point to me even if the other episodes are not that good but this.....just makes me more mad that I should be and I now I don’t sound like it but I do want to keep a calm tone to present my points.
Anyway, this is Mark A.K.A the wolf pony and I hope the next day will be even better. See ya.
