Imaginary Fears
It was a cold evening; it was getting dark, but it was still bright enough to see my garden. I looked out of my window. Everything appeared normal, but there was one ginger and white cat. This isn’t unusual, cats wander around gardens daily. But this night there wasn’t just one cat, there were two. I didn’t notice the second cat immediately as it was hidden under my coffee table. The second cat was black with white feet.
The two cats will meet but how will they react? Will they fight? Or will they just walk on by without acknowledging each other? I was personally hoping to see a real catfight.
The black cat stepped out from the darkness under the table. And the two cats noticed each other. They both froze and stared. It was clear they were in a state of shock. Dum-dum! Dum-dum! Dum-dum! The sound of their little hearts would have been beating quickly, and the cats would have begun breathing rapidly. This tense stare-off only lasted around 1 minute, but it must have felt longer for the scared cats. The Ginger cat was the first cat to walk away. It begins moving at a slow pace while maintaining eye contact to ensure it doesn't get surprised from behind. With each step, the ginger cat's speed increased. After reaching a significant distance away it paused and looked back one final time before leaving. The black cat remained in the same spot during the ginger cat exit. And then left moments later.
This is a very interesting experience. Those cats' sympathetic nervous system was clearly activated. The sympathetic nervous system is a part of the body peripheral nervous system. It is responsible for allowing the body to go into its fight or flight or in this case freeze response. Every creature has developed this response. This response is crucial for every creature's survival, in preparing them to fight or run from the dangerous predator.
In this case, it is clear that the cats overreacted. The cats weren’t planning to attack. So they were anxious for nothing. They created a fear from their own imagination. This experience isn’t so different from some of our daily thoughts. Whether you are worried about an important person disliking you or experiencing imposter syndrome. The first example is you ruminating about reasons why they may not like you. but it often does not reflect reality. Therefore you are worrying about nothing. Next, imposter syndrome is when you doubt your skills, talents or achievements. And you may fear being found out as a fraud who just got lucky. These thoughts are most likely false. So, you are skilled and deserve your past achievement. Therefore, sometimes our worst enemy is our own thoughts.
If you want to learn more about imposter syndrome. You could check out a great video by Aperture called “Imposter syndrome: What is your worth?”. Or you can check out the Life kit podcast episode about imposter syndrome called Tackling imposter syndrome. Or you can search “imposter syndrome” on Ecosia or Google to learn more.
