I’ve noticed that my willingness to form an opinion on a character who I know nothing about has entirely to do with how long their propaganda is. This litmus test is parabola shaped. Too short and I don’t have enough info to work with, and also don’t know if the OP has a personal nitpick rather than pointing out a clear fucking-over. Too long though and I’m sorry that happened but I ain’t reading all that.

Good on you, James Animorphs submitter. That was a very concise propaganda that explained all the great things about the character, what the author did to screw them/their character arc over, and why it matters. I do not know him but I will now vehemently agree that he was fucked over </3

on the topic of James from Animorphs: first of all, that’s just how morphing tech works. James’ disability wasn’t genetic, so morphing fixed it consistent with how morphing had always worked, not as a magicure Just For The Disabled Guy. Second, the massacre of the Auximorphs was meant to further the themes of the horrors of war and eroding morality. I won’t comment on whether having disabled characters serve this purpose is ableist, but I don’t think it’s getting screwed over to fulfill your narrative role. If anything I’d say James got screwed over by not fully exploring his leadership skills before he died

Alas for James! He is SO cool, okay, he’s one of a group of disabled kids who’ve essentially been abandoned to the care of a children’s hospital, and he’s their unofficial leader and advocates for them and tries to protect them and he can do wheelchair martial arts! And he is unfriendly and suspicious of strangers and is not vilified for this, it’s framed as part of his protective personality! And then he and his friends are recruited to become the Auxiliary Animorphs and help fight off the alien bodysnatchers invasion, and their disabilities are an ADVANTAGE because the aliens are ableist and don’t want disabled host bodies, so the Auximorphs will fly under their radar! And all of this is extremely cool, but then canon goes and has the morphing technology CURE his disability, and has this be some huge quasi-miraculous unambiguous good, and that is BLAH. And then he and the other Auximorphs are terribly underused as characters right up until they are ALL killed off at once! And it is such a shame! I DEMAND justice for James!
