Eurovision 2011: Welcome to Düsseldorf!
Germany was exceptionally happy to have won and to be hosting Eurovision. Not since 1983 had they had the opportunity to show off, and in 2011 they fully intended to show what Germany could do. Being Germany there were no questions about funds being short or there not being any suitable venues. They did want to go big though and from the four potential bidding venues, ARD picked the largest. Düsseldorf Arena.
The football stadium that could hold up to 50,000 spectators, and the first time since 2001 that Eurovision had been hosted in such an arena, and situation that resulted in the hometown football club, Fortuna Düsseldorf having to play their home fixtures at the end of the 2011 2.Bundesliga season at their training ground.
The installation of the Eurovision set at the arena was documented in a series of time lapse images, including the installation of a huge lighting rig as well as the return of the LED screens. This time the entire back-wall of the stage is a seemingly seamless screen of LEDs available for whatever the delegations want to present. The whole set-up appears up-to-date and state of the art enough to ensure that you know the cash has been splashed.
Another measure of the bigger is better ethic that was back in style were the number of countries entering. San Marino were back, Hungary were back, Austria were back after a gap of four years, but the really big news was that Italy were back. One of the original seven nations to enter Eurovision in 1956, the home of the Festival di Sanremo, the template for Eurovision, and a huge financial contributor to Eurovision had returned for the first time since 1997. A fourteen year hiatus was now over and Italy were headed straight into the newly reformulated big five. The two-semi, big-five-plus-host set up for Eurovision as we know it today had finally been put in place.
Even better was the news that for once, no country had withdrawn. Slovakia came close to pulling out, ostensibly for financial reasons, but they remained in the contest for now. That meant there were forty-three nations in Eurovision again. The joint largest competition ever, matching 2007.
There were some hangovers from Oslo in 2010. The stage was once again a circle, this time in the middle of the stadium so that performances were more genuinely in the round. That stage was low, but as the bulk of the spectators were in the terraces around them, there were no problems with sightlines for the majority.
The postcards were back, but there was still no opening act in either of the semi-finals. The voting set-up was unchanged from 2010, with juries giving fifty per cent of the marks in both the semi-finals and the final, however there was a new executive supervisor. Svante Stockselius had left the role, with Jon Ola Sand stepping up.
As in 2010 there were three hosts. Anke Engelke, presenter and comedian, Judith Rakers, presenter and journalist and that sensational super sack of German television Stefan Raab. He was certainly taking credit for Germany hosting in 2011 having been the person to organise the selection of Lena in 2010 and he was definitely going to let us know all about that as the week progressed.
