The Official Sloane Ranger Handbook: The First Guide to What Really Matters in Life [1982]
mention of Tonks in obituary
Ann Barr, Journalist, 16 September 1929–4 May 2015: Gifted features editor of Harpers & Queen who launched 'Sloane Rangers' on to the world.
At the height of her powers Ann Barr dyed her hair a startling version of its original Irn-Bru colour and displayed her legs in quirkily patterned tights and velvet knickerbockers combined with high-fashion jackets and jewellery, topping off the ensemble with her trusty Barbour and what a friend described as “those dreadful old shoes”.
She occupied a tiny top-floor flat in a smart block near Notting Hill Gate where she entertained with gusto a gang of friends which included the comedian John Wells, the poet Rosemary Tonks, the journalist Anthony Haden-Guest, Quentin Crisp, the designer Celia Birtwell and the oil heiress Olga Deterding.
Although Ann Barr never married, she had several romances. An affair with the concrete poet and typewriter-art pioneer Alan Riddell was followed by a long courtship with a young Mayfair art dealer.
For the past 30 years, however, Ann Barr threw in her lot with a parrot called Turkey, who accompanied her to parties and caused havoc when left alone at home , chewing at the first editions, laying an egg under the bath and then pecking her owner so savagely when she got home that precautionary injections were needed.
After she left Harpers & Queen in 1984 Ann Barr’s later career was spent as features editor at The Observer, although she continued to contribute to her old magazine’s Barometer page. Eventually diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, she remained active, selling Armistice Day poppies in High Street Kensington and telling a Sunday newspaper that surviving Sloane Rangers were “a stratum of a bygone middle class, at least one rung down from David Cameron and his friends”. By 2010 she had moved into a nursing home in Pimlico along with a few mementoes and her beloved Turkey, now kept in a cage.
She is survived by her parrot, for whom a suitable new home has already been found, and by a host of devoted god-children. [The Telegraph, 5 May 2015]
Foodie or Not Foodie . . . That is the Question
To Foodie or Not to Foodie . . . #foodie
I have a question for you, and it’s a straightforward one.
Are you a foodie?
Now before you go working yourself up into an excited tizzy, wielding your tender and juicy duck confit like it’s a vicious sword, allow me to take a couple of steps backward for a moment.
Foodies
Call some people foodies and they’ll likely want to beat you so hard with a turkey leg that your grandchildren will feel it.…
