Kirk Douglas, the legendary American actor who braids young Brigitte's pigtails in the photo.

Brigitte Bardot is at that time an aspiring 18-year-old French actress, whose appearance in a bikini on the Croisette beach caused a real sensation.

Ann Douglas (right) is Kirk Douglas' wife, who also helps fix Brigitte's hair.

One more thing from the Bookforum update, this time from Christian Lorentzen’s elegy for literary irony in a time of gothic and sentimental narratives, both in our politics and in our fiction. There is, if I may, only one problem. The sentimental and the gothic are not at root children’s literature; rather, they began as women’s literature.
