@bluewinnerangel published an analysis yesterday and it made me read the lyrics for the first time ever and they're def more interesting than i realised. not bc i had written the song off or anything, i just... didn't think of her. i'm so sorry, i've changed my ways

so, generally, this song is 100% a fan's ode to faith by george michael. we have the sample, we have the same theme in the lyrics. but that's not what this post is about

bc we have your interesting thesis statement: only angel > anna > she. now, you definitely caught my attention with that bc you know i'm a sucker for looking through a gender lens at anything harry does.

i can totally see what you mean. in only angel, just like in anna, we have an elusive woman that harry doesn't understand. (i'm following the timeline that demy suggested btw where anna is older than only angel bc that's what i believe as well.) the (power) dynamic is a bit different, but with only angel i see it all as a power struggle of the internal gender experience

harry, or whoever "i" is in the songs, doesn't understand the woman. this is a general theme in harry's songs, where if a woman is mentioned, it's someone who is erratic and plays tricks. in kiwi she manipulates, in only angel she's manic, in anna she's a big question mark. and you're right, that ? only grows and grows and then you have she.

While the huge similarity between all of these is that the woman is an elusive figure, the main difference is that in she she creates no frustration or anger. I def see only angel > she as that growth, acceptance of gender ambiguity, fluidity, without it causing that anger bc it's so fucking hard to figure out. It's definitely interesting to consider anna in the same context, and I can see it. It's the beginnings of this idea of Woman Who Is She, where mistrust is still on the foreground. i don't have a conclusion so here have a heart <3

Did we ever talk about how, when Agnarr and Iduna died, Elsa was right into a depression phase and surely instantly blamed herself for their death (even though at the time neither Anna and her knew the reason of their trip) simply because they got the news they died in a storm which she certainly thought she was responsible of because she very likely had a panic attack the night after they left and she thought the magic cold impacted the weather?

did we ever talk about how, for the three (3) years following the Great Thaw, Elsa definitely shared this guilt with Anna (even if it took time to open up and put it into words) and Anna did everything she could to promise her that she was not responsible at all and convinced her that nothing in that tragic trip would be because of her?

did we ever talk about how, when Elsa and Anna learned in that ship wreck that their parents actually went on that trip to get answers about Elsa’s powers, THE ENTIRE WOUND OPENED AGAIN?!!?!

I too am ace and know nothing of the bedroom But top or bottom isn't just sex It's a way of life Is Elsa a take control kind of girlfriend? Or a get swept of her feet girlfriend?

But yeah, that’s definitely true. It reflects personality and vice versa. That’s how I’m convinced that Elsa is versatile. She’s SCARED 24/7 of what she’s capable of, but also….. is very PROUD of what she’s capable of. Guess what it looks like in the bedroom!

Also on a sidenote, because I know y’all and I know you’re probably asking yourselves the question now, yes I think that Anna is an absolute top haha

Ehhhhh Anna's plans are pretty simple When her sister froze the whole kingdom and Kristoff asked what her plan was she literally just said " oh I am Going to talk to my sister" And then Kristoff berrated her for having no details and no backup pointing out all the flaws in her reasoning (more than i have listed) she just brushes him off but when her plan fails she has absolutely no idea what to do until Kristoff sees her hair and takes her to his family So Anna doesn't plan ahead or that well

And I’m even 100% sure that she totally came up with the “Oh i’m going to talk to my sister” plan literally the second after he asked, like ‘oh right i don’t have a plan, meh, this will probably work anyway’

honestly Anna is SUCH a Gryffindor, I have all due respect to people who sort her in Hufflepuff but HONESTLY.

What weapons traning do you think Canon Elsa and Anna would have? I bet they both know how to use a sword and either one of them might know a bit of archery

mmmmh that’s a difficult question. I’m not even sure it’s part of “““princess training”““ (i put the ‘‘ because i hate this term haha), like, they probably both had courses about precious classy stuff, or horse riding, but not weapon training. Especially Elsa, with the 13 sad years of isolation.

HOWEVER. Anna is an absolute rebel and very probably asked the guards to have weapon training. (“What the hell do you mean I can’t learn how to use a sword??”) actually OUAT!verse even stated it, and Anna is an absolute fight nerd

so, Anna probably had a couple lessons, or intensive sword training, but I do believe Elsa got nothing (and what for now haha? She can kick anyone’s ass with ice spikes and create an entire army of snowmen lol)

as for archery, I can tell you it’s veeeeery very complicated. Anna being impatient af, I think she gave up pretty quickly, and it’s more of her style to run into battle yelling and hitting directly with her sword. Learning how to aim properly with a bow take years of practice!

(Maybe Elsa took the time to learn archery in recent years. But I doubt it.)

But can we talk about how, while Elsa was locked away and told not to ever show her feelings, the inverse kind of happened to Anna? She wasn’t locked away in her room, and no one told her what to do, but she was always alone and never had any reason to hide her emotions. She could rant on and on about whatever she wanted for hours because no one was listening, and I find that incredibly sad. On the one hand, it’s good to not bottle everything up, but on the other hand, oversharing is something that happens too, and it’s clearly affected her by the time we see her in the movie. She says everything she thinks, (Remember her awkward faux meet-cute with Hans?)

She just doesn't get the social rules of conversation and I find that so interesting and so sad

I was browsing the The Art Of Frozen and I found another riveting image in one of the early sequences. The scene from above was from “Sequence 2.0 - Meet Anna and Elsa.” In the drawing that was shown on this page, you’ll notice that it could be traced as a part of the Do You Wanna Build A Snowman/For The First Time In Forever story board. 
I think this is so significant because we can draw the conclusion that Elsa was also trying to touch and try to communicate with inanimate objects just as much as Anna did. This adds to the fact that Elsa was truly desperate for human contact and interaction. She was practicing. She was hoping that someday, she’d be able to hold hands with Anna again. With her mom and dad. She was craving for touch and warmth. What amuses me is the notion that the scene with the knights could’ve been Elsa’s scene as well, or a parallel to what she couldn’t do that Anna could. Now I wonder.. did the directors find it too morbid and heartbreaking to include in the film? How much would’ve changed in the movie if it was Elsa who had that scene with the knights, and not Anna? 
 Just look at how she actually takes her glove off to shake the knight’s still hand. Elsa looks so much younger here in this shot, I’m assuming she was around 15 or 18 in this sketch - and she looks so afraid even though it’s not even a real hand. Another thing to take note of: Elsa NEVER takes off her gloves - not unless it’s truly necessary like that time she did during her coronation. But in this sketch, she willingly does it. In secret. She mustered the courage to hope, to dream, to try and succeed to do this simple task of shaking someone’s hand, real or not real and… she still failed. 


I wish this sequence was added in the movie to show more of Elsa’s point of view. It’s such a revelation to know that the songs Anna sang were also really Elsa’s song. 

For The First Time in Forever? Yeah, that was Anna’s anthem of (temporary) freedom. But wasn’t it also a song about Elsa’s fear and secret longing to be with Anna even for only a few seconds? The parallels are just so stunning. 
 “There’ll be actual real live people, it’ll be totally strange…” It’ll be strange, exhilarating, terrifying, familiar, and new all at once. All of Anna’s pain and struggle was mirroring Elsa’s. It was never one-sided. They are parallels of each other. 
 What breaks my heart most about this sketch is the fear and defeat in Elsa’s face after she froze the knight’s hand. Maybe this was a haunting realization that touching her parents and Anna will never be a part of her future. Maybe she had given up hope then. Animation is so beautiful. But the rough drafts, the sketches…man, they tell so much more about the story and the characters.

Why the Queen of Arendelle is just as misunderstood as Elsa.

Although I loved Elsa and Anna’s mom because she had this gentle and delicate presence that balanced her stern and authoritative husband’s demeanor, I think she remained quiet…way too quiet in regards to her daughters’ new living arrangements and broken hearts. Although her and the king’s actions were reasonable because they only wanted to protect the girls, I wish to have seen more of the queen and how she had come to terms with this. I feel like she didn’t have much of a say in the situation because…well, she never really spoke up. She kind of just let the King decide on everything, even though she knew how much this would hurt the girls. But I know the queen suffered just as much…if not, more because she was there to see her own children ache. She had access to Elsa’s room and she was probably devastated and driven into immense guilt by Anna’s never ending questions as to why Elsa is no longer outside her room to come play with her. She was there to see both worlds. She was there to see both cry.

Twice in the movie, we see her hands fly to her mouth in shock and in fear. But she doesn’t say anything. She doesn’t question or chastise Elsa for what had happened to Anna. This may have been a gesture of surrender or shock due to “lack” of reaction and dialogue…but this action speaks so much in itself. It’s not just shock. It’s also pain. And panic. And desperation. She was the one who gave birth to a magical daughter. She was the one who carried Elsa and Anna in her womb for nine months. Maybe she blamed herself for Elsa’s magic. Maybe she didn’t say much because she was blaming herself for Elsa’s suffering. She was the one who knew her children’s first words, the first time they took their first steps, the first time an icy episode happens…she was there for it all. She was desperate, and any desperate mother wouldn’t be able to think things through rationally and make decisions that they think is best to rise to the occasion.

I think this scene captures the heart of the Queen and how she’s handling the situation, Look at her eyes. Look at how badly she wants to cry but she covers her mouth and looks at Elsa in pain that only a mother can feel. She doesn’t know how to help Elsa. She doesn’t know how to stop Elsa and Anna from hurting. She’s stuck and this is the only option she thinks she’s left with because she was so close to losing Anna and she doesn’t know how she can live with that…even in the expense of Elsa losing herself and living in depression and anxiety. But that doesn’t make her a bad mother. She didn’t mean for any of that to happen. It simply makes her a mother with so much to lose with so little options. Obviously, she wasn’t happy about this. She loved her daughters. She loved them so much that she surrendered to this crazy plan of having them separated so they both can live.

Damn it, Elsa looked exactly like her. And to see a carbon copy of hers suffering so much, and also witnessing her youngest daughter hurting and with no clue with what was happening and why...must have stabbed her heart into a billion pieces.

Many will agree that the Queen placed her hand on the king’s back to somehow comfort him after Elsa told them both to not touch her for their own safety. She was shocked by how Elsa quickly recoiled from her father’s touch. And she was destroyed because it was all her and her husband’s decision and own doing. From what I see, the Queen needed this support to prevent her from breaking down. She needed something…someone to touch to keep her on her feet before she finally loses her composure. She knew she had to respect Elsa’s wishes. And from then on, she doesn’t know when she can hold her daughter again. She never did. She never had that chance again.

She was supposed to be gone for just two weeks. She never came back. No last hugs. Elsa curtsied. She doesn’t give them a hug and she didn’t get one back as well. This was the last interaction between the Queen and her firstborn. Anna was able to embrace them farewell. But this. This is heartbreaking. Elsa and her gloves. Elsa and her fear of freezing her parents. She doesn’t get a single hug, and the first human contact she had after thirteen years consisted of her caressing a dead Anna’s face. 

In the middle of all the chaos that night brought when the accident happened, the Queen loved Elsa. Little Elsa looks at the face of her mother for comfort and the Queen gave her that and more. The Queen smiles at the little girl who has the same piercing blue eyes as her. It’s not a big smile. But it’s there. Her eyes speaks of compassion and of understanding. She has faith in Elsa and she believes in Elsa. And I think this is why Elsa, in the most quiet but ostentatious way, tried to be like her mother. She imitates her mother’s appearance in her own coronation. She wears her hair the same way and she has an heirloom attached to her dress that looks exactly like the Queen’s. She holds her mother’s memory alive because even though she thought she had screwed everything up that night and for the many nights to follow, she knew the Queen loved her. She knew her mom will never see her as a lesser being. Her mom will never see her as a monster. 

The Queen of Arendelle did what was best for her children. Even though it didn’t yield positive results, she damn well tried. But even though she wasn’t there to change it all and mend her daughters’ wounds, she died loving her children. Elsa and Anna knew that. And that’s why they had always attracted each other like magnets and found their way back to each other no matter how many years had passed and how long they have been separated. Because in spite of it all, they knew what a family was. They knew their mother and father loved them.

Guys, this is the King and Queen. Filthy rich and powerful people who would give anything and everything to their kids. It doesn’t make sense for them to separate and inflict pain on their daughters (UNINTENTIONALLY) because they want to. So no, I don’t agree that they are the “enemy” in this story. Not at all.
