One might think that a movie about a 27-year old guy who learns that he's got a 50/50 chance after being diagnosed with cancer would be down right depressing and probably find no entertainment value it in. You would be wrong. In director Jonathan Levine's new film 50/50, it does the complete opposite. Not only does the movie take cancer head on and deals with it on an emotional level, but he adds just the right amount of comedy, which never overshadows the heavy subject matter. The always fantastic Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Adam, a writer of radio programs who is diagnosed with spinal cancer. Seth Rogen is Kyle, his best friend and confidant. Adam is facing the worst part of his life as he's nearing the break up of his live-in girlfriend played by Bryce Dallas Howard. His mother (Angelica Houston) wants to immediately move in with Adam after learning of her son's diagnosis. He of course, is adamantly against it and talks her out of it. Adam meets Katherine (Anna Kendrick) at the local hospital. She's the hospital appointed therapist that he meets with weekly. She's young, cute and pretty much has zero experience but is very well educated. During their first counseling session he asks, "So what are you, like Doogie Howser?" and she replies, "Who? Does he work here?"
50/50 is inspired by a true story about Will Reiser, who is the writer of the film. Rogen is the true-life friend that stood by Reiser during his cancer diagnosis and remission/recovery phase. I guess you can say it's a full circle moment for the two buddies. It's no surprise that Gordon-Levitt is fantastic in the movie. His touching and funny performance is one of his best yet. When it's time for Adam to shave off his hair rather than lose it to chemotherapy, he does it with gusto and bravado. There were no special effects used here either. And I think that's why Rogen's performance is just as good. He's such the good-natured friend and always has Adam's best interest at heart, no matter how many times he wants to get Adam laid. This is one of those unsuspecting dream teams that work well together in harmony. Their portrayal of friendship during the most cruelest times comes off as something that is all too real. Nothing is forced in 50/50 which is why it works perfectly as a comedy too. All of the supporting characters are fantastic, most especially Huston who has one poignant scene at a dinner table when Adam reveals to her of his illness. I'm not ashamed to say that I lost it during that scene as well as in several other scenes. 50/50 will make you laugh, cry and your emotions might be all over the place by the conclusion of the film. But isn't laughter the best medicine? In this case, it certainly is. 50/50 is one of the year's best!
