Through fandom text-based roleplaying, I’ve lived so many other lives—and experienced so many other bodies.

Our November piece is live! ✨ Newt Albiston writes about text-based roleplaying in fandom—and about using these existing characters to explore their gender identity.

I can’t think of anyone I’ve roleplayed with who hasn’t used roleplaying as a way to escape reality, or even trial a new life. Some people go to therapy, and some people write with their friends about semi-fictional pirates having sex. Some people do both!

Canadian Geese are incredibly successful at adapting to human-altered environments. Their survival is their response to change. They are more than their reputation: they are dedicated partners and fierce protectors of their young. They thrive in community.

Within our lifespans are many endings, periods of change. And while change can be frightening, painful, or sad, what you’ll come back to is better because you’ve grown. We do this to survive, just like migratory birds.

Death is an end to something, but a natural and not unexpected end. It marks change and transition. I thought it fitting to capture the seasonal migration of geese to express this concept of natural endings and change.
