Spa Etiquette 101
As indulgent as getting a massage can be, not everyone may be familiar with the protocol when it comes to a quick session of spa'ing. So, I get to sit in a robe allday? How much am I supposed to tip? What qualifies as a 'good' spa? We asked Anna Marie DeVito, Spa Director at Caudalie Vinotherapie Spa at the Plaza Hotel in NYC, to relay some of her knowledge for a crash course in spa'ing:
Arrive at least 15 minutes early. "There's nothing worse than rushing to relax!" DeVito says. Arrive even earlier to take advantage of the spa's amenities -- some spas serve light food and drinks, or have comfortable lounging areas to kick back and read. When you get your robe, you can take it all off underneath...or not. This totally depends on your level of comfort -- DeVito notes many guests will undress completely since they're under the covers for the entire service (therapists only un-drape one area at a time). But if you feel more comfortable with a little something on, keeping your panties on is totally acceptable. Speak up. Massage therapists are great at kneading knots out but they're not mind readers. If you want your service to meet all your expectations, don't be shy to say something if you want a certain area targeted, or if the pressure isn't firm (or light) enough. Don't show up to your appointment sick. "There is a common misconception that having a massage will help get rid of a cold," DeVito says. "A massage actually has the reverse effect and also exposes the therapist to potentially getting sick, too." Not cool, people. Snacks and drinks are always signs of a quality spa, and so are the details. Are you welcomed warmly by the staff? Does it feel like a peaceful oasis when you arrive? Do services feel special and effective? Higher quality salons will go the limit with all of these things.
Alert the staff beforehand if you're pregnant or have any cuts or bruises the therapist should be mindful of. Therapists will usually ask all the important questions prior to a service, too. If in doubt, consult a doctor before making an appointment. If you have to cancel, give at least a 24 hours notice. It's the nice thing to do. Of course, no one can foresee emergency situations, but if you can help it, the earlier the notice the better for the spa to make other arrangements. You can request the gender of a massage therapists when going for a couples massage. If there's a strong preference on this, make sure to mention that when making an appointment! For tipping, 20% is the golden standard. "Having said that, remember gratuities are a gift!" DeVito says. "It should be a gesture for excellent service regardless of role or seniority." Congratulations, you're now an expert at spa'ing :).
