Gosford Park premiered at the BFI London Film Festival on 7 November 2001.
Written by Julian Fellowes, who Bob Balaban introduced to Robert Altman after Balaban had discussed working with Altman on an Agatha Christie-style murder mystery.
Gosford Park was a commercial and critical success, and was nominated for 7 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress (Maggie Smith), Best Art Direction (Stephen Altman and Anna Pinnock), and Best Costume Design (Jenny Beavan). It received the Oscar for Best Screenplay.
