Anna Jacobson Schwartz (1915-2012) was an economist, considered one of the world’s greatest scholars in the field. She is best known as a co-author of the work A Monetary History of the United States, seen as one of the most influential books of the 20th century.

She served as the president of the Western Economic Association International, as well as the International Atlantic Economic Society. She wrote 9 books and published over 100 research articles throughout her career.

“She was an American economist who worked at the National Bureau of Economic Research in New York City and a writer for The New York Times. Paul Krugman has said that Schwartz is "one of the world's greatest monetary scholars." Schwartz collaborated with Nobel laureate Milton Friedman on A Monetary History of the United States, 1867–1960, which was published in 1963. This book placed the blame for the Great Depression at the door of the Federal Reserve System. Robert J. Shiller describes the book as the "most influential account" of the Great Depression. She was also president of the Western Economic Association International in 1988.”

The U.S. money supply comprises currency—dollar bills and coins issued by the Federal Reserve System and the U.S. Treasury—and various kinds of deposits held by the public at commercial banks and other depository institutions such as thrifts and credit unions.

These measures correspond to three definitions of money that the Federal Reserve uses: M1, a narrow measure of money’s function as a medium of exchange; M2, a broader measure that also reflects money’s function as a store of value; and M3, a still broader measure that covers items that many regard as close substitutes for money.

ART :: John Stezaker Collages at Anna Schwartz

Anna Schwartz Sydney has launched a series of photo collages by esteemed British artist John Stezaker.

Collaging imagery from magazines, books and postcards, Stezaker then conveys his own poignant meanings that explore the viewer’s relationships with the photographs as memory, as source of documentation, and the relationship with modern culture. Verging on surrealism, his work recently showcased at the Sydney Biennale at the MCA.
