Annie lived in a situation that wasn’t great. Her parents were below the poverty line and had too many children to take care of. They were mean and bitter about it, and Annie and her siblings learned the hard way that speaking up was the best way to get in trouble. This is what drove Annie to selective mutism from a young age. 

When she got a letter to Hogwarts, the only of her siblings to receive one, her parents and siblings began to look at her like she was a freak, casting her out. When she decided to go to the school, hoping for a better life than the one she had at home, she was told in no uncertain terms never to come back.

School wasn’t much better than home had been. While the out and out bullying was something she could handle, after a while it began to wear on her to the point of a self esteem crash. She bottomed out, losing all sense of self and sense of direction, and managed to start believing everything terrible that she was told about herself and her birthright.

She left school at 15, deciding that if Hogwarts didn’t want her, she didn’t want it, either. For a year, she had nowhere to go, nothing to do. It was hard to get a job as a 15 year old with no home and no family, but eventually she found a family, desperate times looking for a nanny. She took the job without question for room and board, and was given a little money to spend on the side.

The Wizarding world didn’t matter to her anymore, though there were minor occasions after her 17th birthday when she would use little touches of magic in her day to day life, to get something from a high shelf or to help with a bit of a mess made, never anything major, and she mostly assimilated to a full muggle lifestyle.

That changed when the war came knocking on her door in a way she never expected. PAM wasn’t something she was looking for, but when the war got to be too much to contain to the wizarding world and spilled over, Annie decided that since she had been rejected (or seemingly so) by them, she would fight against them, and hopefully find a place where people would accept her. 

Its odd to see people she once knew in the Wizarding World, and to know that she’s not on ‘their side’ anymore, though connections are never a bad thing. She offered her services to PAM mostly for intel. She could return to the wizarding world more easily, slip in much more quietly, both literally and metaphorically, and gather intel that some PAM spies might not be able to collect. She wants to be important, part of the war in a meaningful way without having to fight.
