Are you a little surprised at how little the finale focused on Serena and Blair? If you had only watched that, no way would you realize that the series is supposedly about those two girls and their friendship. The ending they gave Serena especially is just so lackluster. I loved Chair, they were perf. But the last shot kind of made it feel like the whole show was about Dan getting the girl. I had hopes the final scene would be SB.
I should have probably answered this a long time ago
but here.
I think i've stated before that i am in fact disappointed with how little and banal the mere Serena and Blair interactions in the finale we had were. i expected more. And maybe it's my fault for having expected more, knowing this was gossip girl.
I really liked the finale overall, and i accept it for what is it. Regardless, there's nothing anybody can do now to change it. The real issue for me, is not that the finale didn't include enough moments. It's just that the writers waited until the last minute and tried to cram every moment in the finale and there wasn't enough air time for all of it to play out.
They went into the final season knowing they only had ten episodes and they choose to waste those episodes on stupid plot lines. the whole Serena/Stephen thing was such a waste of time because it was could have ended in episode 2 and the whole drawing out the sex tape and keeping Serena and Blair apart for all those episodes because they thought it was going to draw some big omg moment. It was frankly quite stupid. And i am happy with the capitulation of Blair and Chuck's sls in the finale but it wasn't because i was a fan of how they were handled in the final season altogether. There was a good amount of potential for remedy after the end of s5. I just wanted the writers to take advantage of that because we rooted for CB two years while they were apart and we just wanted some rewarding moments. Blair seducing Chuck was definitely a win. The airport moment was definitely a win. So i'm not outraged. They did give us some moments. I loved the Thanksgiving episode and how Blair and Nate allied to pull Chuck out of his funk over his father. i liked several things. I guess i wanted more. Yes, i guess as a loyal fan, i did feel entitled to more after putting up with thee heartache for 6 years.
But going back to Blerena. I'm mostly upset because we were told the season was going to be about them. The season was not about them at all. Blair and Dorota had more screen time than they did. I didn't want them to get to that place at the end of s5. However, i accepted it because i figured we'd get a couple emotional moments out of it in s6.
I think what the problem with Blerena categorically is that Dan became too important to the plot. He was major in s5 and s6. I think that as long as Dan was that relevant to the central plot, Blerena would not get the attention it deserves for the sake of Blerena but rather for Dan. Even their last conversation had ended up being about Dan and not truly about their friendship like i wanted. And it's not even because Dan is that important to the dynamic of their relationship. Blair has no affection for him so in that case Dan is not a conflict but rather a topic. And at first i felt like it was because it was something they needed to talk about to really be friends again because somehow when Dan came into the equation they had both crossed the line. But i also realized this was probably the only season since s1 that Serena and Blair's friendship was actually about Serena more than it was about Blair. And that's why Dan was so important bc the POV was supposed to be Serena. And that's why Blair was also brought up in Serena and Dan's relationship bc the POV was also about Serena more than it was about Dan. in the case of both these relationships, Serena had both the deciding option and ultimately it was her ~choice.
However, i hate that we couldn't focus on less on Dan's relevance to the plot line because he truly wasn't that relevant if the writers didn't want to make him out to be. but alas! the writers love writing about Dan and i guess their point was to write him into the core of the core of the story of the series. And that core would be Blerena and they had achieved that by having him date the both of them, the Queen Bee and the It- Girl, and also have him have power over them at extremely vulnerable times of them lives. Something no other guy has ever been able to do or even attempted because they're not as douchey or maniacal as Dan. So Dan had successfully infiltrated the inside circle of the UES to its core. And the dramatic irony was supposed to be that he was still considered an outsider in spite of that. That was the point of the last Blerena conversation. How Dan would never be one of them because he grew up in a different milieu and just didn't belong~. Dan was more than just 'one of them'. Dan was the puppeteer.
I wonder if the writers thought it through however this being the last Blerena conversation ever, the most important dynamic of the show. Wow, this is Serena and Blair's last coversation ever, let me make it about Dan. At this point Blair had already expressed her disapproval towards Dan, i don't think it needed to be reiterated. I know it was supposed to be an inciting incident to propel Dan to reveal his identity but they could have made the conversation about way more than that. They could have shared one more ILY.
I think that episode 7-9 was better than what they shared in the finale. And i actually liked Blair chasing after Serena in 6x09 and telling her not to go. It reminded me of 4x01 after their double date when Blair imploded. But she said. " I don't care about about dating a prince. i don't care about dating anyone. i just care about you."
And it was so touching and heartfelt and i believed her. I honestly never felt like Blair apologized to Serena before. I know she meant well but i didn't think she ever did express her apology properly. But when she told Serena not to run away, i believed her. And when she offered Serena to come eat pie with her or joked about scratching her eyes off if she ever dated Chuck, I thought it hypocritical maybe, but i appreciate the restoration of their camaraderie. And from that point on, i knew they would be fine. I was ready to accept whatever came next.
And i guess the final bid was that Blair was throwing Serena's wedding at her house. And it seemed like Blair was very involved in the preparations. So the final moment in a way was about Blerena though not directly implied. I hated that it was Derena ending because it ruined the moment for me. They should have just surprised us with Carter or something. I would have fucking cried. Everyone would have thought it Dan because he looked like a groom but then Carter would have shown up and Dan would have grabbed a seat next to Jenny and Serena would have come down the stairs smiling. And BOOM
Scarter forever
