Hi! I've been sitting on this question for a while, and just now found someone to ask about it! My story takes place in WA state, and the MCs are basically 'amateur detectives'. They gather a folder of information, that in their eyes unquestionably proves the antagonist is guilty of a whole bunch of crimes, and anonymously deliver the folder to a police department. I know the evidence wouldn't stand up in court, since it isn't official, but how would the police react/what actions would be taken?
The police usually take an anonymous tip serious until it is discredited.And the Supreme Court ruled in Navarettev. California that an anonymous 911 call or a tip to the police canbe enough to establish probable cause. But after the arrest is made, theinformation needs to be verified independently for the law does not permit the governmentto prosecute a criminal defendant without some type of corroboration.
