The Doctor was under the console of the TARDIS. Since having to wipe Donna’s mind of any trace of him and taking her home, he had hardly been back to Earth. He had been travelling around, but it was mostly different planets. He wasn’t going to risk taking anyone else traveling him. It hadn’t worked out for him in the past. Martha went home, Rose got trapped in a parallel world, before coming back and then ending up there again, and more recently, Donna had no memory of him at all. He couldn’t ruin anyone else’s life like that. This is what he did now when he wasn’t running around a planet. He would be somewhere in the TARDIS or under the console fixing something that didn’t even need to be fixed at all.

That had changed when Fran came along. When she was around him, he always had a cheery look on his face and he always hid his sadness well until she had gone to her room on the TARDIS or something. Clearly he hadn’t. He looked over at her when she said this to him. He hadn’t realized she was in the room as he sat by the console. “What makes you say that?”
