I'm reading Another 2001 and things are picking up. O.o

Book 60, 2023

Yukito Ayatsuji's "Another 2001" is such a weird read. I'm sure it's partially a result of it being the third book in a trilogy but it doesn't seem like they were conceived of as a trilogy but I discovered in Ayatsuji's afterword that it was a magazine serial written over the course of several years. I wonder if that's why I found it -- not necessarily repetitive, but echo-y? I think that might also be an intentional effect because the narrative concerns a supernatural cycle, repeating patterns, trying to balance elements of the cycle to cancel out it's effects and the other Ayatsuji novel I've read, "The Decagon House Murders", is very carefully constructed around the conceit of its narrative format. Maybe it's a translation thing, making something that was more subtle in the original feel heavy-handed; this is my first time reading a novel published by VIZ.

It's interesting but long in the tooth and even if I don't have to look at them, I don't appreciate being made to think of rooms full of ball-jointed dolls.
