I like to imagine that because of Wen Yuan being raised in the burial mounds for a short bit, and also wei wuxian casting protection spells on him, He becomes VERYY sensitive to ghosts and other paranormal creatures.
Unfortunately this only applies to him when he was young, because after awhile all the protection stuff just wore off and Wei Wuxian wasn't there to renew it. And as he cultivated he was also cleansed of any remaining dark energies that might've stuck onto him during toddlerhood.
But for a short time, when he would go to the Jingshi, he'd see Madam Lan. Or when he visited Wei Wuxiand grave, he'd see his ghost.

#mdzs#lan sizhui#lan yuan#lan xichen#lxc#lsz#madam lan#my art#that's a really fun headcanon i love that#the odds of a-yuan being an exceptionally strange child especially in the first few years at the cloud recesses is so high#like. not even going into all the trauma that would have come from the war and being in a work camp and losing his parents and ALL THAT#which is already A LOT#but then he's in the burial mounds#surrounded by resentful energy powerful enough that people aren't supposed to ever survive them never mind making a home in it...#he's used to barely scraping by with necessities never mind luxuries on land filled with the dead#one of his caregivers is a corpse#another controls corpses#death is a VERY close thing in the burial mounds#and he's literally the only child#now you kill all of his family AGAIN#leave him sick and abandoned and so feverish he loses his memories#and now he's in the cloud recesses. presumably surrounded by children his age who were raised there#even without remembering the burial mounds he is going to be So Fucking Weird compared to what the other kids are used to#on a fundamental level#no wonder he and jingyi became best friends i can imagine jingyi being a boisterous enough kid to make friends with the strange new kid#who doesn't seem to know how to play with anyone else properly#so yeah!!#long ramble to say: YEAH WHY SHOULDN'T HE GET TO SEE GHOSTS#that feels SO on brand for him#give lan xichen one more thing to stress about when he's trying to help keep an eye on his brother's adopted child while he's in seclusion
