Miscommunication

“Hey, Chief.”

Lin looked up to find Kya standing in the doorway to her office. “Hey yourself. What brings you downtown?”

“Oh, you know.”

“Mhmm.”

“Came to see if you wanted to grab some lunch.”

“I’d love to, but I’m buried in paperwork.”

“That’s a shame, because I heard that paperwork is bad for your health.”

Lin gave a low chuckle. “Probably true.”

“You sure you can’t sneak away for even half an hour?” Kya bit her lip, a mischievous smile playing at the corners of her mouth.

“Unfortunately. I think if Raiko finds me anywhere other than at my desk, he’ll replace me on the spot.” She ached to say yes. Her willpower to deny Kya was faltering.

“He’s a fool if he thinks he can replace you that easily.”

“I won’t argue with the first part of that statement.” Ask me again, Lin thought. Just once more and I’ll crumble and spend the afternoon lost in your eyes.

“Alright, well...” Kya’s smile faltered now, and she fidgeted with her hands. “Another time, then.”

Lin nodded, drawing in a breath. “Another time.”
