“Elise Mezmer?”
Elise nodded at the man standing on her doorstep. He looked like the kind of man who was there to deliver bad news - clean cut, suit and tie, handsome like a television FBI agent with a strong jaw line and deep soulful eyes. She wondered, briefly, if he was going to pull out a badge and inform her of the death of her husband. Then she remembered she didn’t have one.
“What can I do for you?” she asked.
He looked at the ground. “I figured you might not recognize me,” he said. He pulled his wallet out of his pocket and looked through it. “Not you though, you look exactly the same.” He handed her a small photo, faded from age and it’s position behind credit cards in the back of the wallet. Elise looked from the boy in the picture to the man in front of her, trying to see the similarities in the faces while tears blurred her vision.
“Andy?” she asked.
“Well,” he said. “Andrew, now. But I suppose I can make an exception for you.”
“Christ, Andy, I thought you’d dropped off the Earth,” Elise said, giving him a hug. “Come in, come in, tell me everything.”
“That might be a long story,” he said, following her in.
“I’ll make some coffee,” she said. “You still take it with cream and sugar?” She was already in the kitchen, filling up a kettle and pouring coffee into a french press.
“Black, actually,” Andy said.
“Oh my, you really have changed,” Elise said. She grabbed two mugs from a shelf and then rested her elbows on the kitchen island, her head in her hands. “So what brings the great Andy Goldman back to the suburbs? And what exactly was it that brought you away?”
“All in due time,” Andy said. “I haven’t been able to speak to you since high school, I want to hear about your life first.”
“Haven’t been able to?” Elise said. “That sounds very mysterious.”
“Mystery has become my middle name,” Andy said. “But we’ll get there. First, coffee.”
