Help Me Netrunner Cosplay!
Okay, confession time. I’m a 44 year old dude. When I go to gaming cons, I go to play games, not to put on elaborate things and/or flaunt any “Doctor Who + [insert nerd culture thing] mashup” t-shirts. I’m interested in awesome games, and rarely even dress up for Halloween.
That said, I’ve decided to attend the Southern MegaCity Android: Netrunner Pro Circuit Finals weekend in Marietta, Georgia in about 8 days. I’ll be competing, mildly, in the last qualifier tournament on Saturday, but mainly I’ll be there because I’m interested in experiencing what is shaping up to be more than a tournament -- it feels like it could be the first “Netrunner Con.” They’re hosting team trivia contests, cube drafts, and a cosplay contest during the weekend, for all of us who aren’t good enough to make the actual finals (run on Sunday). Lots of prizes and fun times seem to be on hand.
So, I might go ahead and enter said cosplay contest. Why not, right? To my knowledge, this is the first Netrunner cosplay contest, or at least the first I’ve seen associated with a major tournament event. What are my best options, as a bearded white dude with a body type that isn’t large enough to pull off a Whizzard, but will also never have the amazing abs of a Geist? My dream of making an articulated, foam latex Apex head will have to wait, as I don’t have much time.
There will undoubtedly be too many Exiles and Easy Marks. I’m not averse to cross-dressing if I can do it cleverly and not in demeaning way. Should I go as a something more abstract? Build a huge box and go as a Sacrificial Construct? Bring a nice shirt and vest, splatter it with oil, borrow a sledge hammer and go as the Human First guy? Buy a black beret and a turtleneck and go as a male Film Critic?
What do you think, dear readers?
